Ol'timer wants some off season shooting!
« on: November 27, 2005, 05:55:24 AM »
:D Morn'in Air Gun Folk,

I know little to nothing      about Air Guns.  Used my Ol'Red Rider BB gun until it wouldn't shoot again, but that was about 50years ago.

I did shoot a friends spring piston - side lever - rifle a year or so ago AND DIDN'T LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

With all that stuff going off inside the gun, it reminded me of shooting a flintlock. Instead of sssspzzz/bang it was sprooooooong/puutth.

So interested in reasonable quality (not high price) HAND GUNS - single pump - no air tank or CO-2 res., that will allow me to keep in shape for spring/summer/fall when I can return to the outdoors and the .22 - 38/357 - 45acp and 44mag.

Thanks and keep em coming!

Darrell:

For winter garage work at 10m, get a IZH-46M.  Shoot it with open sights...or outfit it with a scope or small red dot.  For ~$250, there isn't a more accurate air pistol out there.

Beeman P3, HW 45...Benjamin Sheridian HB22 or Crosman 1377(Very powerful and cheap+moddable). RWS 9G or a 5g I think...very top end stuff. Then there is a Marksman 2004 which is a Chinese clone of a beeman P3.

:-) Thanks folks,

I am using the net and checking things out.

Also what is the way to go with a rifle to avoid the break barrel and the vibration/noise of the springers.

Some of the handguns you listed sound like they will shoot far better then I ever would, but that is OK, just want to be able to shoot when the snow is deep everywhere but the house and shop.

The prices seem quite reasonable for the "listed" quality claims.

Keep em coming!

If you don't want a springer then you are left with either pumps(like the Sheridan or the ones from Crosman), co2 powered or PCP(unfortunately about the most costly price wise).  The co2 powered rifles can be costly to shoot as those little 12 - 12.5 gram cartridges can/do leak and just when you need it the cartridge s empty.  Power is usually questionable on them too.  Pump up rifles are about the cheapest but are noisy when you must pump one up eight or more times to shoot.  PCP’s have the power, accuracy and consistency but they are also very expensive.  Prices start at about $400.00 and go up(up as far as $5,000.00 for some custom models).  The vibration isn’t a problem, it just takes a littler re-learning how to shoot them and they give excellent accuracy, power and dependability.  The problem with springers busting up scopes is cured by using scopes approved for springer air rifle use and a good set of mounts.  An air rifle approved scope doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.  One can be purchased for around $50.00.  If you’re worried about “barrel droop” then purchase an underlever or a side cocker.  Both are known for their accuracy.  Basically it boils down to what you want and what your wallet can stand.  Lawdog

On the pistol my vote goes for the IZH46M, superb quality and accuracy at an affordable price.

On the rifle I may suggest you the Daisy POWERLINE 953 TargetPro as a very inexpensive ($72) option that would fill your requisites.  But if you open up your options to PCPs then you may find even substitutes to some of your powder burners.

For what you have mentioned I would suggest a SSP pistol and rifle for your use. SSP stands for single Pump Pneumatic which means esecually i pump and you can shoot. For a pistol i wouls say either a Beeman P3 or if thats too expensive a Daisy 717 both are extremely accurate but not especially powerful but definately excellent for 10 yard target shooting. For a rifle I beleave somebody has mentioned the Daisy 953 Target Pro this is a SSP rifle. another more refinded version is the daisy 853 which has the same powerplant but much better sights and a wood stock.(953 stock is plastic) Since you want to stay away from springers multipump and CO2 these seem to be among your best choices. Hope this helps.
Any questions you can e-mail me at jmlv175@msn.com
I have photos of all but the 953 and actually own all of the guns mentioned but the 953.
