Vaquero value?
« on: January 01, 2006, 01:29:17 PM »
I have an uncle that is selling me his old Vaquero .45 in stainless steel as soon as tax returns come in.  It was made in 2002 or 2003, with only 200rds through it.  Originally it was a 7.5" barrelled pistol, now trimmed to 5 or 5.5".  He had the Ruger text and wording turned off too when he trimmed the barrel length.  The crown is flawlessly radiused and new front sight welded on with no signs of a hackjob.  Polish is high luster, both barrel and receiver match in shine even though he turned his barrel in his own machine shop.

Along with this revolver comes a cartridge belt and holster(CAS style), some casings, and some hardcast slugs.

The gun is in excellent shape, no scratches whatso ever, no play in the lockup, just fabulous..  ..the gun shoots better then I can.

We struck a deal for $400..  .....my question is,  how bad did he intentionally rip himself off?   I really need to know how much I truly need to make it up to the big guy.

Years ago when I was 19 or 20, he sold me my first pistol..  ..a 8" Colt Python royal blue in like right out of the factory condition for $450(came with dies, holster, belt, brass, bullets, etc too)   We dated it to 1979-1980 as year of birth..   I got it in 1991 or 92..

He's an avid collector of firearms: Colts (pistols and rifles),  LC Smith shotguns,  Browning Hi-Walls, Weatherby rifles(not the Howa Vanguards).  ...so I know he knows the true value of these pieces.

He also said he's gonna make me a deal I cant refuse on a Winchester model 94 carbine in .45LC flavor.  ..

I forgot to add that he has (2) sets of grips for it too.  And he must have at least $200 in the leather..

Got my Ruger .45 SS w/7-1/2" in Dec 2003
The Reciept in front of me says.....
45 Long Colt Vaquero $429.97
Sub total $444.94
Sales tax $35.44
Total =$467.41

I did invest another $210 for a holster & belt and the white (polymer?)
grips.

I would say that you did Very Well. I cannot find my gun anywhere with any barrel lenght for less than $525. I think that most of these shop sales are geared for the person whom is coming in to make a trade.
I do realize that one can do much better than this making a purchase from an individual when possible.

P.S. I did have some worry's about whether the cylinders were going to be undersized or the barrel was going to need turned, or the front sight filed among other senario's. This Gun Is Absolutley Perfect though and has provided many hours of enjoyment at the range along with two whitetail Deer taken In the 2004 & 2005 season.
My 2005 Deer was taken at 45yds. At that range I could have easily hit the coffee cup sitting in front of me! I am getting ready to use it again for our Jan late deer season.

P.S. on P.S. My Vaquero did have some creep in the trigger that needed some bearing surface taken off the trigger to correct it. A little sight black may also be in order when that sun gets high in the summer months but a removable type as the brighter stainless was great in the overcast winter months. All in All This Gun Was Worth Every Penny Of The Purchase Price.

Sorry to get carried away & hope I helped you some. If you dont like that Win 94 in .45 Colt be sure to let me know. :)  :D

Hey (Knight) I think is a goo buy, I just baught a bird's head for $400, and that just the gun -no belts or hoster added. In fact I too have the 45 colt vaquero that would be my asking price for just the gun. So in your case that a steal!

Cool!  thanks guys!

So I pretty much owe it back to him for the value of the leather and loading supplies.

I'll post pics as soon as I take ownership of the new piece.
