crossman quest 1000 or tech force 97 question
« on: October 21, 2005, 10:46:13 PM »
the 97 is rated at 900 fps in .177 cal but the review on their page only got as high as 689 and as low as 503 ...thats about 200 to 400 fps lower than advertised !!!seems either dishonest, unrealistic or needs a certian combination of moon-sun and stars alignment...leaves me questioning the product/ company either way.. I was really hyped on them because i've grown to give LAWDOG on here a great deal of respect and he seems to really like them.

anyhow...i can get the quest 1000x for $95 locally..it seems(from reviews) the scope is pure junk but they don't sell it without the scope so ill trash it or give it away...after i confirm its not suitable for me.

i understand many things can affect pellet velocity and accuracy so id still consider the tech force if a reasonable explanation of the velocity difference can be told to me . 200-400 fps less (almost %50)seems like a lot though.one of the main reasons i was considering the techforce 97 was because its available in .22 cal.its rated at 750 fps in .22 .....but i wonder if ill only get %50-%75 of that (400-550 fps)

i want to hunt and plink with what ever i get and please don't recommend me spending more than 125 on the gun alone if you suggest something else..i have a tight budget plus i want to have enough for a scope to handle the double recoil ....thank you

p.s.  i read enough bad stories on here to not get the daisy 1000 that was my intention b4 i found this forum..thanks

Jeff,

I just got a TF97 in .17 for 79 bucks and it is a great gun for the price.  Mine is very accurate and I was pleased with the quality, especially for the price.  Mine had a very nice stock and good finish and the trigger was okay.  It is easy to cock.  This will NOT be my last underleaver.  I have not had time to crony yet, but it seems to shoot fairly hard.  My guess is that it could eaisly take small game.  I put a 50 buck 3-12X32 BSA scope on it and plan to use it as my trunk gun.

If you want great out of the box quality, I recommend the RWS 94.  Extremely accurate and beautiful gun, at least to me.  My son got his at Bass Pro for 169 bucks but I could not find one on their website when I looked a few weeks ago.  I got mine from Pyramid Air for 186 bucks with free shipping.  It came well packaged with zero defects and no damage.  I have NO experience with the 320 but have read that it is NOT of high quality.

Regards,

Jim

Jeff-B,

One thing to keep in mind is most all manufactures pad the velocity data.  RWS happens to be one that pads them a lot.  The velocity of the 320 isn't anyway near 1,000 fps.  More like in the neighborhood of 800 at best.  As for the Tech Force 97 I have one in .22 caliber and it's rated at 750 fps. and gets an honest 690 plus fps. depending on the pellet being shot.  If you get a 97 pay the extra $25.00 and have the MacCari spring installed.  More power and longer spring life.  Personally I don’t care for the Quest 1000 and know a number of others that bought them and the accuracy wasn’t up to what was expected.  I also find the under levers(and side cockers) ar more accurate than barrel cockers.  Lawdog

For your price range look at the RWs model 320

its a decent gun for the money and being an RWs has the Excellent lifetime warrenty something you won't get from a crosman or techforce. Midsouth shooters suppily has them for $119 for the gun add a Bugbuster 4 or 6X leapers scope and you have a decent setup. the scope should only set you back about $60 for scope and rings and is quite the bargin in airgun scopes these days. While the 320 does not quite reach 1000 fpa neither do either of the other 2 guns you mentioned but iyts power id quite adiquite for what you are asking it to do. targets and small game huntinf out to about 35 yards.
