17 Rem,anygood?

I found a 700 Rem.C class series II today,but its in 17 Rem. Its a goodlooking gun with engraving on the reciever,and nice wood also.
He wants $500 for it and the dies and some brass. I thought it might make a good varmit gun for the PD shoot but it's not as fast as my swift,and probably not anybetter than my 204 or 22 250. What do you guy's think,pass or buy.  My gun trader book shows a value of $1500. Digger

digger if your talking about 1/3 of the price then heck yeah buy it and if all else fails sell the thing and buy about 7 or 8 handis.



and yes the 17 rem is a great varmint gun.

Not to sound dumb, OK who cares, what the heck is a class c series II? The ONLY place I've ever heard of such was in your communication. Personally I think $500 for a used rifle is too dang much. Especially a barrel burner like that one. Unless I knew the rifle personally I'd assume a large part of the barrel's life was gone.

Hi Digger. Is something out of there custom shop?. I like GB have never heard of such. Not that means a hole lot :) The 17 is a great vaminter
but i dont see it haveing any thing over your 220 or the 204.
Id check it out darn good for that price you could alwasy have a new barrel fitted to the action and still come out ahead. :D  Rich

There is (or was) a H&R .17 Remington custom barrel that needed the ejector fitted for sale on e-bay just yesterday if anyone is interested...it was cheap at that time. about $33 plus shipping but we all know how that goes, the price shoots up near the end. I am not interested, perhaps someone here is....<><.... :grin:

Sorry guys, I went back and checked, that one is gone, unknown what it went for. There is another one with a set of dies that is at $78 dollars with free shipping and has abaout a day to go. Looks as if someone says they are giving up Handi's and moving to bolt guns.... :(

I'm not really thinking of keeping the gun,since its in 17 Rem.but the gun its self may be a good buy.  Has anyone got a late model Guntrader with some up to date price's for it? Digger

I think your apprehension is trying to tell you something. For me $500 is a lot of money. To spend it on a rifle that I am not totally thrilled about just don't make any sense to me personally.

Well I looked it over in the daylight and it has a small crack on the left side of the receiver in the stock. Its a Rem. from the custom shop and has some very nice wood but the crack kill's the value of the gun for me.Digger

Ditchdigger,
Last years Blue Book of Gun Values by Fjestad puts a value of $1675.00 on a Remington 700 custom grade model ll with class c engraving in 95% condition. If this rifle were in my area I would be all over it. The 17 remington is a great round, little to no recoil in a 700 configuration. Barrel life with this round is around 10,000 rounds. You should be able to tell from wear if the rifle has been shot a lot. I would contact the custom shop about the crack. Chances are it can be repaired for a reasonable amount of money. Most likely they can also let you know when the rifle left the custom shop.
The 17 remington is a fun prairie dog round up to about 300 yards. But wind conditions can affect the bullet.  good luck, norm

Norm,it was really hard for me to pass on this rifle,but the cracked stock really shook me up. Its not  a bad crack,it would not affect the shooting at all. I may buy it yet just for the action,and shoot it some.If it were not for the crack,I would buy it in a heartbeat and put it on some auction site. Digger

I'm just guessing here, but a Remington custom shop rifle with a crack in the stock sounds like it may be a defective piece of wood.  Maybe they'll replace it for free or maybe a small charge?

Where is the crack--in the tang area?

A call to them might result in a call tag and a new piece of wood.

The crack starts in the tang area just above it and goes to the front about 2" and its about 1/2" below the top edge of the stock.Its in the area of where a mauser bolt release would be.  Digger
