45-70 max level 300 grs
« on: January 01, 2006, 04:11:48 AM »
I know i am treading into dangerous grounds with this question.  What is the max level out of a Rug. # 1 will a 45-70 push a 300gr.  I don't want the answer that i have seen in past where people have put outragious loads way over speck because they can't get out of their minds its not the most powerful cal.  For instance what does the hornady book say or any other reload manual.  I am trying to settle a debate..  I say 2400-2500 fps.  Am I close?  Thanks :D

Funny you should ask.  I was just looking for my #3

Speer #13 shows a 350g maxing out at 2132fps (22" barrel).

Nosler #5 shows a 300g maxing out at 2282fps (22" barrel).

I'm sure my Ruger #3 is strong enough, I wonder about my shoulder however.

The Barnes book #3, just a few max fps are 2301 with RL7 and 2255 with H4198. :D

Quite a Spread in Top Velocities...

Current Max Velocities in strong actions:
IMR: 1960 fps - 24" barrel (@28,000 cup)
Hornady: 2100 fps - 22"
Accurate: 2175 fps - 24"
Sierra:  2200 fps - 22"
Nosler:  2282 fps - 22"
Barnes:  2301 fps - 24"
Lyman:  2347 fps - 24"
Hodgdon:  2532 fps - 24" (@ 50,000 cup!)

Note that "most" 300-grain bullets will perform poorly at impact velocities exceeding 2000 fps; they are designed for lower speeds and will expand violently, limiting penetration. The Nosler Partition and Barnes X-Bullet should handle the high velocities well.

i dont have the newest hornady i have the 5th edition which doesn't show loads for the 300 they say to use the lever data for the  300 grain but they do show the 350 to 2200fps. Buffalo bore has a new 45/70 load out its a 300 grain bullet at 2350, which is safe in a lever so i would think you are in the ball park of 2400-2500 in the ruger #1

Most reloading manuals list 3 loads for the 45-70. Trapdoor loads, Leveracton loads and Ruger #1 loads.  :D

That is because Hornady does not recommend that their 300-grain bullet be shot at more than 2100 fps.
