Bisley Grip Question
« on: December 19, 2005, 05:14:43 PM »
Can Bisley grips be fitted to an old model SBH? If so will they match right up or is there fitting involved?

I believe what you are asking is, can a Bisley grip frame be fitted to a Superblackhawk? The answer is yes. You first have to get the grip frame. Brownell’s is one source. They aren’t cheap. Then they have to be fitted to the revolver frame. Then you probably need grips. They probably don’t come with the grip frame. Or you can just buy a Bisley in .44 mag and be done with it.

I don't believe you can fit one to an Old Model, at least not without a lot of adapting (spring mount, etc.).

I screwed up. Didn't see the "old". That makes it much harder. Don't know if anyone makes a bisley grip frame specifically for the old model Rugers. If not, rework of the replacement gripframe is necessary to make it work on old ones.

Thaks for the info guys. It doesn't sound like something I'll be wanting to do. I thought maybe I could just get the grip frame and bolt it up. Doesn't sound like it's that simple at all though.

You can do it but is requires fabricating some parts the way I understand it. You should check into the Ruger Forum and post  this question under the "Ruger Smithing" catagory or under "Revolvers".

I believe Carl aka "Flatgate" can give you the needed details.

:cb2: Just because it CAN be done doesn't mean you need to. I think you're looking at an expensive endevour that will cost you not only $, but time and frustration as well, and I don't think it will be worth the effort. Follow Tom C.'s advise and just go buy a Bisley. SA revolvers, especially Rugers, aren't that expensive ($389-429 usually around here). You'll be happier in the long run, and you'll have TWO guns!

You can fit a new model grip frame to an old model gun by JB Welding a spent 22 to hold the trigger spring and plunger but you'd have to use the SBH hammer or modify a Bisley hammer with old style 'teeth'.
