I'm a new visitor to the forums and just registered. I've been reading some archives on misfires in TCs. My question is can a hammer spring be put in incorrectly?

Hi Rob and welcome to the Forums. I can tell you that the Encore spring does not matter which way it goes in. As far as the Contender I don't know. You can go to  www.belmtcs.com and he can answer any questions that you might have....Leon

Anything is possible, but installing the spring incorrectly is hard and would require a concerted effort on your part. Springs can get weak, not very often and it's usually a metal problem. If you suspect your spring is bad, new ones from the factory are inexpensive (and if you describe the problem to them, they might send you one free), aftermarket springs are available from lots of places, just visit some of the advertisers on this site.  Okiegunsmithshop.com has an exploded view of the Contender on their web site. Your owner's manual should also. IF you don't have one, all you have to do is call TC and they'll send you a new one for free. They'll also send you the latest exploded view and parts list (with prices), free. So don't buy the one for $5 the guy is trying to sell on e-bay :P . I've got them scanned in if you need it fast. Just send me an e-mail address and I'll send it to you, but they're almost 3 megs total so depending on your connection it could take awhile to download.

The hammer spring can be installed upside down.  You will know it because the hammer has a lot less force required to cock it and it won't hold the sliding safety if you pull the trigger without cocking the hammer.
