Howdy friends, a question fer y'all. I was surfin' thru e-bay and ran across a box of .358 200 gr. original Win. silvertips. The tips look to be rounded enough to work in my .35 Rem but I was wondering if any of you know whether they made two different bullets in that cal. and weight. My main concern was whether they would expand sufficiently at .35 Rem velocities.
Now I know there's .35 cal bullets that will expand 'cause they were designed to do so at .35 Rem. vel., but I just have a sentimental thang for the old silvertips and usually pick up some when I can find 'em.
Havin' said that, if any of you happen to know where I might acquire some more in any caliber I'd be interested in hearing from you. Particulary 7mm and/or .458.

As I understand it, the silvertip bullets were designed ONLY to protect the bullet nose from deformation when cycling in tubular magazines, especially during frequent loading/unloading. They do not have any effect on expansion beyond a plain lead nose.

Shorty I dunno if that's right or not. The reason I question it is that the silvertips were loaded by Win. in a wide array of calibers that were certainly never used in any lever action or tubular mag.
The .270, 30-06, .243, and even the .300 H&H for example.
I just wondered if anyone knew whether even though they were all silvertips if any for particular calibers were designed to expand at greater or lesser velocities than others like what I read about the Nosler Ballistic tips of today.

Gents,
I'm pretty sure that I've shot winchester Factory 35 Remington 200 grain silvertips out of my Dad's old Remington 141. Probably been around 30 years ago, but I'm pretty sure they were silvertips. I also know for sure that there were 30-30 silvertips and clearly they were made for tube magazines. I'm underway and don't have my references with me, but if you look up some old winchester catalogs, I'm pretty sure you will find that there were 200 grain silvertip loadings fo the old 35. All the silvertip is is a small aluminum cap over the exposed lead outside the gliding metal jacket.
