ive had one dig the same trap up 5 times and leave his calling card.put in a freash trap and the same thing.so put in two more sets close by with clean traps.one trail set and one dirthole set.this morning i saw where he had dug into the hole from behind the backing .what is the best way to get this coyote in a foothold?

Fish,
There are a lot of people on here that know a lot more than me, but if I had a yote dig up a trap 5 nights in a row I would quit letting him aggravate me and move on down the road to trap his brother...I have wasted too much time trying to trap yotes that know something is up.
Id pull up....and reset a new area...but thats just me.

I like a good challenge now and then too Fish, this is what I do when necessary:
The most effective method of landing a truly educated coyote is to move down 20' and make a blind scent set, perfectly blended. I like to find a clump of grass to use as the set backing. Use just a few drops of urine, coyote, fox, bobcat or mink urine will work or a natural urine/gland lure like my Nature's Call line, formulated for any of the above animals. If the trap is clean one will nab him within a day 9 times out of 10. Just setting traps back of traps works some of the time but i've seen them avoid a half dozen traps and still dig into the hole somewhere in between them. Good luck! Ace

in kentucky traps on land have to be atleast ten ft. apart

Fish, I know you may not agree with me at this time, but that yote is not a smart one; a smart one comes by once and you never see its sign again in the area. Asa's trick should work...but sometimes the buggers are tweaked good on any attractant. Have you tried an unlured un baited hole near by? This sometimes works. It's too dang bad you regs won't allow you sneak a second trap in right where it stands to dig...I've nabbed a bunch that way.

The other unlured set that sometimes will take them is a plain trench. Someone has written of this set just recently and it will work some times.

You could also try getting your lure up at shoulder level. This location change may be just all that is needed to disrupt the "picture" that focus the yotes attention at the trap bed. Remember you will need to get your trap back quite a bit more; blocking can be used somewhat more liberally with this elevated lure approach.

I'd try Asa's first for it is the easiest and may very well do the trick. Hey a dog would show you his natural sent posts in the area real quick.

If you boiling the traps throw in something natural to your area like cedar, pine, spruce, sweet ferns, whatever. That subtle woodsy odor on the trap really helps traps not to be detected or to smell foreign to the canine. If you are just cleaning up and waxing the traps, throw a little of the same natural odor into the wax. It doesn't have to be overdone to the point of being unnatural, just a subtle hint of odor will do the job. Ace

Remake the set as usual,rebait it.Up the trail 10 ft. place a blind trail set dead center in the trail,blend it in,no stepping stone or sticks.Go 10 ft. past the set,make another blind trail set,dead center in the trail,no guiding.Wear clean rubber boots.Make the sets early in the day to air out.Brush out your tracks.If you can find a place close by the has scratch marks from a Kickback set a urine post set.Truly wise coyotes will leave or avoid a trap set.This one is catchable.Mr Snare in the trail also works wonders.

ive got 3 trail sets out now and two flat sets .with a little p but he has not came back yet but he will.
when you spoke of kick backs in a new area im fixin to set i saw that on a loggin road. just didnt no what it was till you mentioned it.

asa i reboiled my traps in some cedar limbs not much just a little.
