How many using scopes on 500 or 460?
« on: June 11, 2011, 03:14:12 AM »
Just wasn't satisfied with the sights on my 460 Smith & Wesson.I happend to have a good Leupold 4X so decided to mount it up.Purchased a Weigland base and rings and mounted up the scope.Just did it the other night in fact so I haven't shot it yet.Was wondering how many of you installed a scope and are satisfied with doing so?

I used the same base and rings. I mounted a Leupold 4x on my 500 and a Leupold 2.5x8 on the 460. With the velocities those two rounds are capable of they can can shoot alot further than I can with open sights. I believe the scopes enable me to take advantage of their accuracy and flat trajectory.

I had a 454 SRH ad with handloads the factory rings wouldn't hold a scope in place and I had to go to a b square fulll length mount with 4 rings to hold the scope in pace but ended up breaking the bolts holding the base onto the gun. Now that I had gone through that and I have a 500 now and I'm pushing 5000rnd mark of full power loads I don't want to waste the money on something else thats going to just break. If I can distink the target out to 200 yards  i ususally have no problem hitting it with the open sights.

I’ve also got a JR500 and I’ve purchased the Weigland base and use a Leupold 2.5X8 scope and a Leupold DeltaPoint red dot.  I use the scope for load development and the DeltaPoint for general shooting.  Never had a problem with either one.  I’ve got ole eyes and need all the help I can get.

I tried a 2X scope and didn’t like it, as I could shoot with open sights about as well – the 8X really brings the target in and you can see your unsteadiness.  I’ve got some loads that shoot consistently around 1 inch or a little larger at 100 yards rested using the 8X but with open sights rested, I can’t even come close to an inch and sometimes I need a bushel basket to cover the holes.

The DeltaPoint allows one to shoot pretty decent at long range using the tip of the delta as your aiming point.  I can hit a beer can at 100 yards more often than not using the DeltaPoint but using open sights it’s quite the opposite – a lot of misses with an occasional surprise every now & then.

How did that 4X work for you?

I clicked on the "I've" in your post expecting to see the red dot you're considering but got my summary page - not sure what you're trying to convey?

I guess it would depend upon your shooting technique – if you like to hold POI on stationary targets then I would think smaller might be better for some.  On moving targets I prefer a large dot just because it seems to work better for me.  When you look at a 3 minute dot at arm’s length it’s pretty small – that 7.5 minute delta doesn’t look large at all to me at arm’s length – it sounds huge but it’s got a ton of room in that heads up display.

I have a 6 1/2" 500 PC Hunter. It has a Weaver rail on the barrel. I got fairly high Warne QD mounts and mounted a 2x Weaver scope on it. It is very accurate and fun to play with, and the scope pops right off and I can use the iron sights.

Off topic but, Tom C., how much does your point of impact change when taking the scope off then on?

I have Leupold 2X mounted on my factory standard 500 S&W.   I tried a Burris 2-6 variable and did not like it.

With good Warne QD mounts, I can't detect any change in point of impact. If I tested it more across a good solid bench setup, I might be able to tell, but not with what I am doing.
