Large Collectable Cartridges
« on: November 16, 2003, 04:02:06 AM »
I have a U.S. Navy wooden training round marked; Mark 6, 50 cal, 3" Dummy Cartridge.  Other numbering is 329486-B-6 BFT, a small anchor symbol and HMC 1944.  It is 35" long and weighs 25 lbs.  It has an aluminum (?) head cap with the above numbering stamped on it.  There is also an aluminum band near the top where the fuze would normally screw in this type of shell.  It is made of laminated wood, maybe cherry and varnished.  It appears turned on a lathe to the correct dimensions of a 3" naval shell.  Anyone out there know anything about this and what its possible value might be?
Also I am looking for a 106mm recoiless rifle shell, perforated brass casing.  Dummy projectile would also be nice.  Anyone know of a source?

You have what is called a "drill round" used for training the gun crew in loading and unloading the weapon.  I got mine about 20 years ago and there were tons of them around cost was cheap but I don't remember the cost.  Still have the cardboard box it came in.  106 RRs used to be pretty common too, though I don't have one.  Army surplus stores are always a good bet to check out.
