Looking for 1911
« on: December 18, 2005, 11:21:18 AM »
I am looking to purchase a 1911 style pistol.  I have had a Colt Combat Target before, but I traded it for something else that I "just couldn't live without".  The dealer that I trade with most is a Kimber dealer and has been putting the "hard sale" on me to buy one.  I have looked at and handled several of the Kimber models all of which are pretty nice.  I am very intrigued by the Sig GSR/Revolution 1911, but I have not been able to put my hands on one.  I am wanting feedback from "REAL" 1911 owners.  Thanks in advance.

I've had several 1911 pistols, also had the Colt Combat Target model, could kick myself for selling that flat top model, had nice all steel adjustable sights to.
As the years went by, I kind of went from the 1911 models with all the bells and whistles, back to the basics.
The gun I use most, and have with me most now is just a simple Springfield Armoury Milspec model, that just happens to shoot well, and is very reliable. The nice thing about any 1911 pistol, is any quirks they might have can be fixed easily. The 1911 is a simple design that is still with us today and well proven. Got this SA Milspec for 500 bucks out the door, and am going to pick up a GI model soon, if I can find one in OD green.
The only thing I did to my SA was to have a smith tweak the extractor, it did not jam, but the brass a bit lazy coming out and sometimes would plop on my head while shooting. 30 bucks later, problem solved.
Dealers will put a hrd sell on you to buy what they have, and certainly nothing wrong with Kimbers. There are lots of 1911 styles to choose from out there, some plain, and some decked out, you have lots to choose from.

Have fun shopping, it's almost the best part...the best part is getting one home and playing with it.

It depends on what you want to spend and what you want in a 1911a1?

Top shelf?

Affordable?

A no frills basic shooter?

A collectable?

For a affordable, no frills basic shooter, my pics are:

Auto-Ordnance Army WW2 copy 1911a1 45acp $389

Springfield Armory WW2 copy 1911a1 45acp $419

I'm not sure if these are limited runs of the WW2 copies thats why they have me interest right now.  :D

I have heard the Kimbers are good too.

If you haven't identified a niche for it, don't just buy something to satisfy a salesman. You'll get the wrong gun. There are so many configurations of 1911 that just randomly picking one without a specific purpose in mind is almost guaranteed to lead to expensive dissatisfaction.

Niche?

I buy, sell, and trade guns regularly.  If I had a "niche" for all my guns, I would not own a third of the guns in my safe.  I am going to buy a 1911 whether I "need" one or not.  I guess, since I am looking at Kimbers and the Sig GSR, that I am most interested in "high end" 1911's.  I have also looked at Wilson Combat's, but they are more than I want to spend on a handgun.

i have had, and still have some very nice handguns.  if i could only keep one out of the whole enchilada,  it would be my kimber 1911.   it beat out smith revolvers, h+k usp,  thompsons contenders, and my freedom arms as my favorite pistol.   and i REALLY like my f.a. pistol; i just like my 45 a tad more.

kimber,  kimber, kimber.   i would say one of the following models...

or something similar because they have the frontstrap checkering and night sights.  i find the checkering and sites to be two things i wish mine had;  one of these days after things calm down i aim to remedy that.

I have three Kimbers.  I like them all and they shoot great.  However, I don't own and would never buy one of the newer models with the external extractor.  Guys at our range who own them have had all sorts of problems with them.
