Hello everyone,  I'm new to this sight and just received a new 45-70 handi-rifle from my wife for christmas.  I am new to rifles, been bowhunting for the past 25 years.  I have a couple of questions I am hoping ya'll can help me with.  What is a good scope, that is not too expensive, that will hold up to the 45-70.  Second, what would be a good factory ammunition for this rifle.  I will be deer hunting in Mississippi and Louisiana.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks ahead of time for the assistance.

Been thinking of a 45-70 or 30-30 Handi as my next purchase..That may have to wait because I also want a light barel .22 Hornet and a bull barreled .223 in a Handi first...

But hey, it's not like I am becoming addicted to these guns or anything..I can stop anytime I want.. :grin:

The term "Handi-holic" was coined here for a reason,I guess.

I second Quick's reecommendation of the Weaver 2.5.Their 1-3x variable is also a good scope.

If yoiu can handle a bit more power,the 4x Weaver classic would also be right at home on that Handi for shots out to 200 yards..

Get a Nikon ProStaff 2x-7x scope and you won't be disappointed. They run $129.95 everywhere. My 45/70 and 308 barrels both wear them. Lots of eye relief and no problems. From my experience stick with the 300gr bullets. The 405's are alot slower and don't expand well on deer size game. I haven't lost a deer with either load, but the 300's flatten them hard!!

I put a Mueller 2X7 from the optic zone on mine.......perfect scope (and price!). Recoil was wicked with mine until I put the Choate Varmit stock and forearm on mine. It's a pussycat now............very accurate rifle and fun to shoot. Welcome aboard!

Just put a Nikon Prostaff on mine and I'm well pleased with it, lots of eye relief for those 500 grain loads  :grin:  :grin:  and nice sharp optics.

Just got back from my first hunt with my new rifle.  Got an 8-point saturday morning.  The 300gr. bullet did the job.  Shattered both shoulders and he only went about 30 yds. and piled up.  I really like this rifle.  Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
