Just got my new 223 Survivor and was shooting it today.  In my other H&R rifles (Ultra 30-06 and Ultra 243), the spent round is ejected when you open the action.  In the new rifle, I have to manually pull the casing out.  It's not stuck or anything, it pops out enough I can get a hold on the rim and pull it out with ease.  This is my first 223, so is the casing suppose to eject like my others do (I have a hard time finding them sometimes they go so far)?  If so, is this an easy fix or a factory repair job?

Sir, you have one of the newer barrels with an extractor rather than an ejector. That's a good thing, IMO. :D

Sorry buddy, you may have received one of the "New and Improved" ( :-D  :(  ) barrels that has an extractor instead of an ejector. A few here complained about the occasional stuck case so H&R did something about it (can you believe it!!!) and changed the spring loaded ejector to a mechanical extractor. The extractor you have cannot be converted to ejector which I prefer for a hunting gun, however the ejector can be converted to an extractor. I would have much preferred them to have worked on better lock up or polishing the chambers better, or even on cleaning out the filings and "crud" from the actions and have them work on sending guns out with a decent trigger pull so we would not have to re-do the triggers ourselves or send new guns back to have the triggers reworked instead of fooling around with the ejectors. But that is history and we will soon be stuck with extractors, try to use them on a .223 in a snowstorm in Maine while your hunting coyotes, fox or crows and it's -15 degrees and you have gloves on!!! Then you will wish for the old ejectors. I still believe the older H&R Handi ejector barrels will some day command a premium for we hunters....<><....  :wink:

Talk about diverse opinions!!! .308 is a fine learned gentleman but as you can see he is from a warmer climate and I would think he seldom hunts  in subzero weather, especially with a small headed caliber like the .223!!! Even when you get into the single or low double digits on the thermometer it's sometimes comforting to wear gloves, if for nothing else at least to keep your hands from freezing to the gun!!! For me at least, give me an ejector that I could convert to ejector anytime!!!!....<><.... :grin:

Just as a thought, CS has really been grerat to many of us here. If it were me I would call them when they return from their winter vacation and ask them if they would be willing to swap that barrel for a new identical one with an ejector. They may still have some around for the barrel program. Like .308 there must be others who live in warmer climates who may prefer a barrel with an extractor only, especially if they shoot targets more than hunt. I have read here of some that say if you open the action and then flip the muzzle of the gun up towards the sky ( :roll: ) you can get the empty case to fall out. If that acrobatic act works sometimes, most times, or even all the time, I believe that is just to many gyrations for a hunter to go through, especially if he is trying to stay hidden from the game!!! Sorry guys, I believe we shot ourselves in the foot asking for this one :( ....<><.... :grin:

Thanks for the replies.  I'm just glad there's nothing wrong with the gun.  That whole extractor instead of ejector thing is going to take a little getting used to though.  I've already caught myself trying to cram a catridge in before taking the spent one out.  Got lucky I think, the Survivor I got is an awesome shooter, best of all my H&R rifles.  Fired 20 rounds today, and could cover them with a 20 gauge shotshell brass.  Pretty good I think, considering its in its "pretinkering" stage.  Anyway thanks for the info.

Like MSP Retired said if it is shooting that good I wouldn't touch it. I would kiss it every night before you go to bed and be happy. :D
MSP have you ever tried a pair of the shooting mittens i have seen where you can expose your fingers for a shot. Maybe these would allow you to pull the empty case out. :D

Thanks Night train, I have a pair, I just can't get used to using them, I have used nice fitting pairs of gloves for so long I like them best. I am happy to have barrels with ejectors that work well now, just hope I can fill the caliber voids I want to with ejector fitted barrels....<><.... :grin:

I just re-read my post and it sounds like I was blowing smoke.  While this 223 is a shooter I was only able to shoot from 50 yards today.  I'll get a better idea this weekend when I will be able to go to an area where I can shoot out to 400.  It's still about the funnest little rifle I have to shoot. If it holds up, don't worry I won't muck around with it.

Aw come on, you're making me blush, MSP Ret  :oops: I  almost never see 'subzero' weather here, and can't imagine hunting in it.

As far as a preferences go, I'll take the hunters with the ejectors and the paper/varmint/predator shooters in extractor if I can get them. That's why I felt the extractor would be a good thing on a .223. I only have one barrel with an extractor, a .308 Win., and it takes some getting used to with bare hands. I would have preferred that particular barrel with an ejector, but I didn't think to ask for it that way, and I don't know if that's an option now. Take care and a Happy New Year to all.

This is what Leftoverdj does when hunting with an extractor.  He tilts the muzzle up as he breaks open the rifle/shotgun and allows gravity to eject the case after the extractor starts it.  He says that it is as fast as the ejector once it is practiced enough.  He has posted it here at least once.

My point exactly, if you can do that extra act and make it "it is as good as" or almost as good as an ejector with that extra gyration, why not just keep the ejector? It seems you are trying to make something inferior as good as the thing it replaced!!! But of course it probably cheaper to make just an extractor so I guess we are stuck with it now....<><.... :roll:

:DHey Gloves are wore in Wisconsin 9 months out of the year ....I can spell ejector not     X   tractor .....Ok :)  :)  :) I will probably get one someday .....a new tractor......I crack myself up :)  :)

the "tilt" thing will not work with mine,(223)the extractor holds the shell a bit snug and will not allow it to fall out

I agree with msp ret,it works ok for us folks in temerate climates,but I can see where sub-zero weather would make them VERY awkward

LODJ's tilt method works on my .22-250 but not on my .204 Ruger, a little cleanup or honing of the extractor might make it work if the need is there.
