i tried some CCI mini-mags the other day and i think they were cleaner and more reliable (in my semi's) than winchester super-x.

what are your favorite brands for both reliability and accuracy?

My Single Six likes CCI Stingers best in the .22LR cylinder.  In my 10/22, Stingers do well, Win Super X shoot OK.  It doesn't like Remington subsonics.  I just bought a couple of boxes of CCI Velocitors.  Anyone have any experience with them?  They certainly look vicious.

Cheap stuff!! :)

I like Walmart's FEDERAL BULK PACKs myself!  I've been using the stuff for YEARS and most of my .22's really like the stuff for functioning and accuracy, so I can't complain.  It's about the cheapest .22lr ammo available and is fairly clean with the copper wash jacketing.  The 36gr bullet does a number on gophers out over 100yds quickly.

I like it so much, I have over 10,000 rds stashed of the same lot number alone, along with a few boxes of 'plinking' ammo I need to shoot up.

CCI Green Tag or Standard Velocity shoot great out of my 77/22.  Haven't tried any others.

I don't own a gun that doesn't like the super x ammo the best (excepting some of the high $ stuff). My second choice has been that Wal-Mart Remington bulk ammo which isn't quite as tight, but pretty good for the money. I use mine for squirrel hunting, and the super x keeps me "in a squirrel's head" out to 75 yards. Which is farther than I'll usually shoot, especially out of our canoe (a great way to hunt 'em by the way).

I have two favorite brands of ammo.  One is the Win. Dynapoint which I shoot anywheres from 2500 to 5000 rounds of a year at targets.  The other is PMC ZAPPER hollow points, these two brands are what shoot the best in my three 22s.
Good Shooting,
George

CCI Velocitor
« Reply #11 on: January 17, 2003, 06:43:31 AM »
My rifles, 10/22 and 77/22, plus my savage striker pistol and contender really like the Velocitor ammo.  I was very suprised because none of these guns shoot the Stinger ammo very well.

For target shooting I like the Federal 711 B ammo.

I like the federal target (Match) loads not the super expensive match stuff but the stuff that sells for around 3 bucks a box. It seems to shoot well but hard to find at times. The Winchester stuff seems to shoot well. But as in all rimfires you have to shoot just about every thing at least once and see what your gun likes. I have had Remington not shoot sometimes and just dent the primer area which I guess you can get with any of them but it seems I have had more problems with Remington shells. Even some of the 22 mag stuff that I bought that was 11 bucks a box had a few misfires. To me that is unacceptable. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

22 rimfire ammo
« Reply #14 on: February 07, 2003, 07:45:13 AM »
One needs a smooth rimfire barrel to begin with. Fire lapping a rough barrel and/or cryogenically treating it may smooth it up. Once you have a smooth barrel that doesn't foul too badly then most anything will shoot in it.  For target off-the-bench work at paper the SK Jagd fodder from Germany sold through Champions Choice is the best deal around. Their cheep Standard Plus will average half-inch groups even beyond 50 meters/yards. SK Match and Rifle Match will drive tacks out to 100 meters and their Match Gold (big bucks stuff) will simply out perform anything that I've shot in the past 40 years. Last years NRA Smallbore Rifle Silhouette National Champion, if I'm not mistaken, shot the SK Standard Plus and fired a score of 38 of 40 in the winds at Raton, NM. That should tell you something about the off-hand accuracy of this stuff.

For a bit more power to put over those IHMSA Field Pistol and NRA Hunters Pistol steel targets, I like the faster copper plated fodder. PMC High Velocity 38 or 40 grain and CCI's newest 40 grain Velociter is right for me in a ten inch TC Contender barrel.

For the 22WMR rimfire one cannot go wrong with either Winchester HP's or solids for accuracy in most pistols or/and rifles. PMC is right there also. CCI's 50 grain Gold Dots are slow but they sure put the steel targets over with more authority. If you need more power with the 22WMR then it becomes expensive but worth the effort if you do, just put a 25ACP shell holder in an old C-press, use a Hornady press type bullet puller in the C-press and pull out the factory bullets using the same safety rules as for reloading. Seat some good 50 to 52 grain .224 bullets over the factory powder that came with their 40 grain loads. Just make sure that you don't compress the powder when you seat the bullets, and only shoot these reloads in temperatures of 75 degrees or cooler temps because of possible pressure problems of sticky cases or blown out rims.

What else is out there?

The best .22 LR ammo I have ever shot is Eley Black Box.
( 3/4 inch at 100 yards out of a Kimber HS).
I shoot metallic silhouette and only accuracy counts.
Velocity and expansion don't matter to me.
But at $5.00 a box it hurts everytime I have to buy some.

Eley Rifle Target is good, also. ( 1 inch)
Dynamit Nobel's RWS Rifle Target at $2.75 is good. (1 1/8 inch)

For recreational shooting with a Ruger 10/22, Winchester Dynapoints function well.

I have been using Winchester bulk pack HP's for most of my shooting. They are accurate and cheap. I have also picked up a brick of Remington Vipers and find then accurate and hard hitting.

My favorite picks for ammo...
« Reply #18 on: February 23, 2003, 01:01:58 PM »
I have a 10/22 with a worked and polished action and a green mountain fluted bull barrel.  There are more types of ammo that this gun does not like than it shoots well with, but here are my picks...

Eley Tenex Ultimate for match shooting
CCI Green Tag for practice on the benchrest
CCI Blazers for plinking
Aguila SE Hollow Point for hunting
(These shoot tighter than the CCI Green Tags at less than 35 yards)

CCI Stingers jam, and most of the other subsonics dont have enough pop to work the action completely.

My 2 bits.

I have three 22lr guns all are used as squirrel getters. I have three 22lr loadings that I use in these guns; Federal Gold 900, CCI Velocitors, and Eley Tenex Ultimate depending on where and how I'll be hunting. The Federal and Eley stuff is always "worked" with a Hanned SGB tool and the Velocitors are "worked" on an ACU-RZR to create the "NastyNose". All of these loadings are "paper " capable and in the case of the first two are very squirrel capable after they have been run through the SGB tool. As far as the Velocitors they become real "bombs" after they get the NastyNose treatment and my CZ 452 just loves them that way.
Love those .41s'

I hunt rabbits and other small game with a Remington 514 boltaction and use CCI Stingers.  The Idea behind the Stinger is a smaller, lighter holow point bullet with a longer case and more powder behind it.  They can get pretty expensive, up to $5.00 a box.

My Rem. speedmaster likes pmc zapper and federals. Tiny groups out to 50 yards, but at l00 the speedmaster is not as accurate as some rifles. Never a hint of a jam in 10 years though.
