45/70 for Lion
« Reply #60 on: December 19, 2005, 12:20:00 PM »
Ghoster,
Please listen to the guys that tell you use a better caliber.  Never for get the 45-70 is one of the weakest, and I don't care about Ruger 1 levels.  I still falls into this category.  I have a 45-70 and love it.  Will it kill the big 5 yes, but so will my 270..  A guy I know well that owns a very large sporting store took a cape buff with his bow.

I do not see where GeorgiaDave was baiting any one and by the way he don't sound like a anti hunter or a  troll. Go back and read his posts and also read his profile. I think you owe GeorgiaDave an apology, If it was me that said that i would go back and Apologize to the man, But thats the way i was raised, As far as i'am concerned thats the end of this discussion. Hope you have a good day :D .......Joe........

That's your opinion, and you are right, it is the end of the discussion.

No Bleeding Heart Here !

Hello again,
In NO way was I finding fault with anyone or their practices. I happen to like lions, tigers, and bears and would never hunt them. To each his own. I meant no disrespect, and was surely not posting in an "anti-hunter" method.
While a 45-70 will indeed kill any animal on the planet it is not the "optimum" cartridge. The hunter must do thir part including keeping shots within effective range and delivering both proper shot placement and angle. If the goal of hunting of big and dangerous game is to dispatch the animal quickly from a safe distance, why would the .50 BMG not be a good choice ? It certainly meets any minimum energy requirements. It has proven to be accurate at long distances which would provide a hunter to engage the animal from a safe distance. The .50 seems to be the "optimum" cartridge. Perhaps the comment about the belt fed gun was a bit inappropriate, but the choice of caliber was not. As far as any arguement that it would be overkill, is it that much different than someone hunting Whitetails with a .338 mag, or evn a .300 mag. ,while a .22 Hornet will kill a deer ? Am i condoning using a Hornet to hunt deer, NO, but it will indeed kill a deer if the hunter does their part.
Again I was in no way being instigative or negative. I simply brought up a point that had not been made about a big bore choice for Lions as well as other dangerous game.

A formal Introduction.............
« Reply #63 on: December 20, 2005, 05:04:36 AM »
Hello again,

After the thrashing i recently took, I would like to formallt introduce myself. I am Dave jackson from McBean GA. I am a married father of two kids, 9 and 11. I install automatic fire protection systems.

I have been hunting small and large game since I was a small child. I learned to love the outdoors and nature from my Dad and many other family members. I was taught to respect the game you hunt as well as the innocent bystanders( woodpeckers, non game animals, raptors, snakes, songbirds, etc.) and only take what you will use. To this day I live by this ideal.

I am continually involved in introducing kids to the outdoors, especially those who have no one to teach them. I love to take a kid along to show them the things that fascinated me the first time that I saw them. Things like live animals and birds, nests, burrows, trails, tracks, different trees, and everything else that I can teach them in the time that I have them. My father taught hunter sefety and I volunteer my time to do the same. The young people are our future and we ALL need to invest in them !!

I also have a vast knowledge of firearms, bullets and ballistics. I have gained this knowledge not only from the hundreds of books in my library but from experience in the field and at the bench. I have reloaded and shot many cartridges from the most minute centerfires up to the .50 BMG.

My hunting resume includes over 100 whitetails with weapons including both compound and recurve bows, .223, .243, 30-30, 7mm mag, .308, 30/06, 35 Rem., .444 Marlin, .44mag rifle and pistol, and 12 ga. shotgun.
So you can see that the "bleeding heart" and "anti hunter" remarks were WAAAAAAAY off base.  We process all the deer we take ourselves and as of right now, my freezer is well stocked as I have taken 7 deer so far this season.

Again, I meant no disrespect to man or beast with the other post and did not aim to offend or enrage anyone. This was just a thought from an open minded hard core hunter and lover of ALL nature.

I wish you ALL a Merry CHRISTmas.

Dave I may have over reacted to your post, but I thought you were trying to be facetious with you 50 BMG comment. I did not think you were serious, and I take comments like that to heart. I am an avid hunter, from bow to rifles. I also defend my hunting and gun rights, and I am very out spoken in doing so. Wether I agree or not with someone's hunting methods, I support them as long as it is legal. Even if I don't practice there hunting method or 100 % agree with it, I don't openly put them down for it. That is how I took your post and if your intention was not that, then I do Apologize.
