New Cannon, questions about carriage
« on: January 02, 2006, 06:48:20 AM »
I have been visiting this forum now for a few weeks and have found lot's of helpfull information,  But have a few questions,
I have just purchased a 1841 style cannon from cannon mike's, the overall length is about 28" with a bore of 1 5/8. I would like to make my best attempt at building the correct size and style carriage for this barrel. what is the best set of plans out there to use? Do the plans from DGW have info on building 1/2 scale.   Also i would like to put 30'wheels on this because I have herd they are a bit stronger than the smaller sizes. will the carriage look too big for the barrel?  Any info or opinions you can send my way will be helpfull.
I have checked all the links in the sticky at top of page for plans, but just want to make sure I get the best for what I plan to do.

     Thanks  vtx-

A full scale 1841 6 pounder is 65.6" long so yours is about 46% if it is the 30" Mike says or 43% if 28" long.  Full size wheels are 57" in diameter so scale wheels would be about 26 1/4" in diameter for 46% and 24 1/2" for 43%.  You will have to decide if that much difference (14%  or 22% oversize) is important to you.

The best plans are from Antique Ordnance Publishers but they are full scale so you would need to convert the dimensions to whatever scale you decide to build to.
