new to C&B, load data for 48 dragoon 3rd model
« on: January 04, 2006, 07:54:50 AM »
Hello all, just traded in my Ruger Vaq .45 for a Uberti 1848 dragoon 3rd model. My heart was set on a 58 new army but fell in love with the dragoon when i saw the dragoon. This thing is a beast!

Well my first question here is what do all you dragoon shooters use for loads, powder charge, powder type, ball size, wad or no wad. Is there anything i need to look out for or check. I already have Gatofeo's article on "proper use of a cap and ball" memorized, thankyou so much Gatofeo.

Also what is the maximum charge i can load into this beatiful monster.

Lastly my Dragoon came with a little safety manual, uberti folded brochure and a Black Powder Revolvers book. Is there anything else that could be missing or is that it. I just want to make sure as this sport is new to me.

Thankyou ahead of time for taking the time to answer my questions and i cant wait to make some thunder of my own!

The dragoon chambers will hold 50 grains under a ball- or the same volume of substitute powder.  Generally, the loading lever is long enough to properly seat a ball on top of 40 grains of black powder with 45 grains being a pretty good working load.

It is very likely that the literature that came with you gun shows much less powder.  This is because the companies that produce the revolvers generally include the same instructions with the Dragoon that they do with the smaller chambered 58 remingtons and 60 armys.
While results will vary, here are some useful loads. The recorded velocities are typical of this revolver with multiple observations but will be different in another gun or with different components:

all of the loads are accurate and none of them produce anything in the way of uncomfortable recoil.
