We can go down to our local geological survey office and buy large topo maps on the township level for anywhere in the state fairly inexpensively. Pretty handy stuff when you are hunting public land or new areas. We also found a local printer that could laminate them. It works well for scouting trips and taking temporary notes on for later. Just use a grease pencil and it will wipe off easily. Or use a permanent felt tip for long term marks. They can get wet and still be useable. It adds years to their life. I have a few that are close to 10 years old and still look like new.

Free topographic maps are available on the internet. Printed quality isn't as good as the USGS maps but they are serviceable. And free. 4 scales, user selectable. If you click "print this map" it will bring up a screen showing exactly what will be printed. If it isn't what you want, you can still cancel before printing. And they're free.

Another neat web site:
 www.terraserver.com.
They have arial views of ANYPLACE !! My brother-in-law got us a spot to hunt this fall, and I got on theis site to get a quick overview of the land. Some of the maps are several years old but still a pretty cool site to check out.

You can also try and talk to your local fish and game dept.  Last year my buddy got drawn for elk, and he talked to the f&g, and they sent him a map of the hunt area.
