The consensus here will be that the .22 LR isn't big enough for a coyote. I wouldn't know, as I've never even shot one. I do know that I put down an old farm dog at close range (2-3ft.) with a .22 pistol, and I thought it was out with the first shot, but when we got to where we were going to dispose of it, it was still holding onto life, just barely. Now a LR out of a rifle is a totally different story out of a rifle, as I use one to put down livestock at work all the time and it only takes one shot, but again, this is at the same 2-3 ft. I might get flamed for this, but if I saw a coyote when out walking, I would take a head shot if you could get within about 30yds...just be sure to put the bullet where it will do the most good.
