I am loading some bullets, in a bolt rifle ,and the bullets have a canalure for crimping. Problen is the oal that i shoot puts the groove way out above the case mouth. This is not a prob since I dont crimp is it? Othe that to me it is unsightly.

If you aren't crimping it won't hurt a thing for the crimp groove to be foward of the case mouth. Most crimp grooves are where they are so that when they are crimped they are at the correct OAL for pump or semi auto rifles to assure proper feeding. If the looks bother you your only choice is a different bullet that doesn't have a cannulure.

Jeff,

You did not mention the caliber you are reloading. The recoil could indeed necessitate a crimp to keep pressures going thru the roof! I suggest a Lee Factory Crimp Die as it allows you to adjust the exact crimp necessary for your needs regardless of crimp groove. Most likely around 40%-50% of the reloaders have the LFCD. AND it is inexpensive. :wink:

VTDW, Correct me if I'm wrong please. I know some cartridges require a crimp, but on a bolt gun wouldn't neck tension be more than enough to hold the bullet in place without a crimp?

Jim,

Recoil will tell you sir. Fire a round or two with some in your magazine and check the COL and see what is happening in your rifle. IF you are only loading one at a time in the chamber I would still eject after chambering on several cartridges and check the COL before firing just to make sure.

It PAYS to be very careful.

I will try that. I gave my son my Rem. BDL in 30-06 a few years ago and went to a Encore in 7-08 so I didn't worry about recoil as it has no magazine. I'll get his rifle and try that. Sorry Jeff, I didn't mean to hijack your post.

You do not need to crimp for a 270. Seat the bullets to fit the magazine and/or jump to rifling wanted, whichever is longer, and go shoot it. You don't need to crimp unless you are shooting a lever action, pistol cartridges that need the crimp for pressure building, or have a recoiling sob. I don't even crimp my .338 loads, and it hurts after a few rounds.
