.300 whisper or other whisper rounds in a Handi
« on: December 20, 2005, 04:09:47 AM »
1.  Anyone got one?

2.  If one were to make one, how would be the best way to accomplish it?  Buy a .308, then cut off the rear end (turn down), then rechamber?  If so, then I suppose it would be easier/cheaper to just buy a T/C Contender or Encore, no?

3.  The Corbon or SSK loaded ammo in 240 gr/ 1040 fps - what barrel length is that optimized for?

What a cool cartridge. http://www.quarterbore.com/300whisper/

I hear about Whispers quite a bit and wonder what is to be accomplished with the round.  When I say that, I'm just wondering what its purpose is and why it is supposed to excel at whatever it is doing.

Conceptually, I have what I would consider a "whisper" when I load spire points for my .357 Mag in the heavier weights, like 200 gr or 250 gr.  I have never gotten the accuracy I felt was possible when I use those types of bullets and actually get better accuracy with a big cast bullet than with the higher priced jacketed bullets.

I think it is also possible to load most cartridges down using heavy bullets with reduced loads and see the same results the Whisper would show.

Maybe I just need to be enlightened on the benefits of the Whisper cartridges?

It seem to me the easiest method would be take a stock 223 barrel and have it rebored, like Mac had his 338-06 made from a 25-06. Would the 300 Whisper reamer clean up the 223 chamber? The Quarter Bore write up stated that the 300's performance matched the 7.62x39s performance, but with 308 bullets. Does that make it in the same class as the 30-30? Could a 30-30 be loaded to the same level? Of couse I realize the rimmed 30-30 case would never work in a AR 15 platform like the Whisper is designed for. I'm just wondering about the performance level of being "sub-sonic".

The whisper rounds are just a slow, that is , subsonic , heavy bullet.
The only real purpose is to kill people , or game , with out anyone noticing.
Most cartridges can be loaded subsonic, cast bullet shooters do this as a nomal activity.
Just cannot understand the hoopla over this series.

I'm glad the concept and technology of the 'Whisper' rounds is out there!  And literally take to heart the idea " ...... shall not be infringed!"

The liberal edited and pro-fedcoat types who think the "subjects" shouldn't have what the jack-booted thugs have are out to lunch, IMO.

The fedcoats WORK FOR US!  Our taxes pay their wages.

The 'Whispers' have their place and loaded with substantial bullets (150 grains in .30 cal for example) are quite capable of humanely downing a deer at close/medium ranges.

Besides the Whispers, data is available for squib and reduced loads that use the Aliant powders like Red Dot, Blue Dot, Unique, etc.

The Whiper series was developed by J.D. Jones for use in suppressed (silenced) firearms. It is based on the 221 Fireball case opened to 308 bullets. The TC Contender was soon chambered in it and silly wet shooters liked it. An AR15 can be set up for it and SSK Industries can make a submachine gun if you so desire. With the 220gr spire points it is accurate at subsonic velocities. Not always easy to accomplish in other rounds. Super sonic loads can take white tails and not cost a fortune in powder usage. Name your poison. :D

I just bought a 7.62X39 barrel to explore this theory.  With the 1:9.75 or thereabouts twist, it should stabilize heavier bullets at low velocities.  Jacketed bullets for the 303 British should work OK, and heavy cast bullets are out there too.  The small case should be pretty efficient.  Haven't got to work on this thing yet, but I will get on it as soon as deer season is over and post results then.

I was thinking the same thing with the 7.62x39. Components are cheaper and you can shoot cheap 7.62x39 if you don't want to use the handloads. (Yes I know about the primer issue.) Heavy .308 might be worth it to try since they should be close enough to shoot well.
