Is there any way to find out what powder is used in a specific factory loading other than pulling the bullets and comparing all the powders and making an educated guess??? I am wondering what the white box, Winchester 45 grain 22-250 Rem is loaded with??? Thanks.

In many loads, the mfg uses a special powder or blend that is not available to the shooting public. However, Winchester claims in their components catalog that using Win 760 powder does allow a reloader to duplicate several of their factory loads. Would need to look it up since I can't recollect which ones those were.

The ammo makers get their powder in barrels. They load and test a few rounds to confirm velocity, adjust the charge as necessary, then load the ammo. That becomes a specific lot number. When they get to the next barrel of powder, they do it again. The powder they get may or may not be the same as we can get. If they get more than they need for a specific run, they sell it as surplus. If you keep an eye on the Military Rifle board or some of the other boards, you can see who is getting the surplus powders and selling them. Keep an eye on the "this is similar to..." lines. When you see surplus powder from winchester that "is similar to....." a Winchester powder used for the .22-250, you have a good chance of finding the powder you seek.

Thanks for the replies!!! I had heard and suspected about blends used by ammo companies, oh well, I can make one that better suits mine anyway. I sold a rifle the other day so I could start on my first custom that I've been wanting for 15 or so years. I found a model 700 in a pawn shop that I plan on trying to make a deal on today. The rifle is a 22-250, I want to build a 22-250 AI with an 8 twist barrel??? I bought a scope the other day that will slow me down for a while, spent a bunch of money!!! I plan on going ahead and mounting it on the factory rifle and shoot it until I can gather the money for a custom barrel, chambering, truing, etc. If you all have any thoughts on what I plan on doing, I'm listening. Thanks.

Be careful, ras308, if the barrel on that 22-250 ain't shot out and you put a decent scope on it, you may find out you don't need a custom rifle. :grin:

Well, I'm headed to the pawn shop after I give blood, if the rifle's still there, I'll try to make a deal with him??? I will eventually make the rifle I'm talking about, but it may take a year or so to gather the funds. Until then, I plan on having fun with the regular 22-250. I have a 222 mag AI in a Contender, my daughters and I have been having fun with it, it's time for another toy. Have a great weekend!!!
