« on: January 02, 2006, 11:59:12 AM »
Took out My ultra Varmint couple days ago, did some shooting Factory ammo, After which I shot some RL's 55gr FMJBT 20gr h4198 oal "2.230, Groups were bad 2" on a good set. Buddy had a chamber gage, Chamber measures "2.135, to put this pill -.020 off the lands The bullet won't seat ("2.380). What say you, any suggestions?

First of all, FMJ bullets are not exactly bench rest quality stuff for most rifles.Sure ,some guns love 'em but most do not.The long throat may not be entirely to blame.I have a buddy who has a Savage m110 built in the mid 1990s that has the long military style throat.It shoots less than 1/2" at 100 with his best load using nothing more than Hornady 55g SP bullets.The slugs are still off the lands quite a bit but that puppy shoots ,throating aside.

I would use a good 55g FLAT BASED bullet to give you enough shank to get the slug closer to the lands and still be in the case.

Sometimes accuracy DOES cost a bit more money somewhere along the equipement chain.Your rifle just may not like  bulk mill spec FMJ bullets, thats all.The Winchester bulk 55g Soft noses are pretty cheap to shoot and would be a good choice,but my first choice would be the Hornady 55g Vmax which is a flat based slug(plenty of shank).

One other thing, unless you are ALWAYS shooting at targets with a good backstop(or in IRAQ), the Soft point/Hollow point slugs are a safer bet in the field-much less of a chance of ricochets...

I found when I reloaded to SAMMI standards for my handi rifles..they seem to like them the best.  I would also read the stickys. Good luck,

I have similar dimensions in my .223 Ultra; trying to seat the bullet close to the lands will have it falling out of the case. I've found that an OAL of 2.245" or slightly under works best in mine. Anything over 2.250" and groups open up dramatically.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

24;

If you want to get close to the lands, try the Hornady 60gr. V-Max.
I know that H&R says that only 55gr. bullets or less should be used. But on Hornady box it says for use with 1 in 7 to 1 in 12 inch twists. And man do these babies shoot. With my load and that bullet it groups better than the Win White Box stuff. And I use them with normal SAMMI Spec COL.
Give them a try, I was really surprised. My orginal intentions was to use that bullet out of my AR-15 Varmiter with a 1 in 9 inch twist.
And they're cheaper than the 55gr. V-Maxes from Midway.
