Dragoon disassembly help
« on: January 04, 2006, 02:22:54 PM »
I can't for the life of me get the dragoon disassembled. I have tapped the wedge from left to right until the whole wedge hit the screw(am i only suppose to tap the little spring in the middle of the wedge or the whole wedge?) Well after i have tapped the wedge all way to the screw the barrel wont budge, the cylinder wont budge nor will the hammer. So anyone know what i am doing wrong??

thankyou for any help

The screw is to hold the wedge loosely in the slot -just to keep it from falling out of the gun.  sometimes it does that and other times, it falls out anyway.  The wedge needs to be all the way out and barely hanging before it will clear the tenyon and allow the barrel to move forward.  New barrels are somewhat tight and  you may need to use the loading lever to push against the front of the cylinder (gun on half cock) to get it moving.

At the bottom of the frame, are two pins that fit into holes in the barrel assembly. On Uberti's, these are usually loose enough that they can fall out during disassembly and handling.  I usually burr the edges of the holes in the frame so that they go back in a bit tighter.

After that, the Dragoons disassemble just like the other Colt types- only a bit easier since all the screws and action parts are so big.
There is a pretty comprehensive discussion of the procedure here:

so since the wedge has to be almost hanging do i have to remove the screw because it wont go any farther with the screw there. I am pushing the wedge left to right, screw is on left side, do i have to push the wedge right to left?

Thanks again, i really appreciate it.

You answered your problem, push the wedge to the left till it tips and then use the lever and a wooden mall to LIGHTLY tap it.

the 1847 walker wedge moves in the opposit direction. Others follow the pattern in one of the pictures on the provided link.
