Leather Covered Gun Case

Gents,
I'm thinking about building a wooden case/box for a Shiloh LRE.  I'd like to cover it in leather.  I've seen lots of photos and pictures of such boxes made by others.  However, the price is prohibitive.  I'd first like to try building a small one for a pistol, then step up to the big box.  Thanks in advance for an info.

I've been thinking of the same thing but covered in a heavy canvas cloth...can't afford leather.  I hope someone who has done something similar will respond.   What kind of wood...ply or solids.  What kind of joinery...simple I hope with only moderate woodsmithing skills.

Come on fella's tell us how to do it.
