I'm thinking of having an NEF .308 rebored and re-chambered to 8x57 Mauser. Any thoughts?

Does anyone know a manufacturer of aftermarket NEF barrels like you can get for the Thompson Center Contender?

This wont work. 308 chamber wont clean up. You can't make much out of 308Win except a long Imp like an 8mm-06AI or a 338-06AI.

That is what I said in my post. Or is my post not understandable? What I am at loss with is. what can a 8x57 do that you can/t do with a 308.

The last time someone wanted to make a 280 or a 7x57 from a 7mm-08, I said it can't be done. Quick posted the cartridge drw, and nobody could make any sence out of the drawings.

Man, they finally found a guy that actually measured the two cases with a micrometer. After the measuring he still was not sure it coud be done or not..

I'm with you Tim...for all practicle purposes...if one was going to go to the expense of a rebore..it they might as well get the best available going...a 8mm...isn't bad...and has taken quite a-bit of animals and with all the interest the gun rags are playing to the 325WSM..it's no wonder folks are looking at it a bit closer.....but..if I were wanting to say completly redo a 308 Bull barrel...the 338-08 would be the way I do it..and since Federal is going to come out with the ammo for it...it sure as heck will be a cheaper proposition for factory ammo than we have for our 338-06's...Heck...maybe we need to get 1 apiece to go along with it's bigger brother :wink:

Yes. You're absolutely right about the .308 chamber having less taper than the 8x57 and it would not "clean up", unless I had it made into an 8x57 improved.

I also considered starting with a bull barreled .223 and going from there. Of course the extractor would have to be altered to accomodate the larger .532 sized case head.

Why the 8x57? I like the cartridge and cheap surplus ammo is still available.
