« on: March 11, 2003, 06:16:01 AM »
I have an '06 but my velocitys are low I tried faster powders with not so good luck. Was woundering if I went to a 309jdj in the Encore over the Contender, could I get more out of the cartridge?Or should I look at the 308 or 308IMP?

What do you mean  by this? What velocity are you expecting from what length barrel? what bullets for what purpose? I don't think you can rechamber a 30-06 t0 a shorter cartridge, so you'd have to buy another barrel AND dies. I think the 06 is a good round for most uses even in a short tube.IF it is accurate ,I would not worry about 100 fps at the muzzle.jh

I know I can't rechamber the '06 to a shorter case, iF I was going to rechamber the '06 it would be 30-06jdj or 300mag.My 15" '06 is accurate but, velocity with the 150gr NBT bullet is 2570fps to me this seems low for the amount of powder I am using.I see guys on here that have a 309jdj that push a 150gr at 2500fps with 8+grs less powder.Im woundering if I should get a 308Win or 309jdj in the Encore.Bullberry has a 30x444 not sure if it is as good as the 309jdj.

Lack of velosity

PJ, If I remember correctly, the "06" has 12% MORE powder copacity than the .309JDJ. Given the same length bbl. and the fact that the case heads are the same, don't you think that they may be living on the edge? Besides that (I've been reading your posts), you go for top accuracy, not velosity- hard to have your cake and eat it too.  Pat

hey pj, if you want to go buy another barrel. go ahead. we'd love to hear how it does too. but your 30-06 is just fine. a little smaller case will get real close to your 06. big whoop-te-do. 100 fps or a couple grains of powder is in significant. the 6br gets close to a .243, the .308 gets close to the 06 and so on, and so on, and so on. usually the bigger cases only out shine the smaller ones when it comes to heavier bullets.
sure get you a .308 or .309jdj. it will still go boom, the animal falls, or the target gets a new hole. same results
bottom line just make pj happy. they are all good calibers just get one of each

PJ,  My 309JDJ maxes out at barely 2400fps w/ 150gr'ers.  That's using JD's reccomended max load.  Sounds like your 'o6 is fine to me.

Thank's guys you have always helped me out.My '06 is very accurate and the elk or anything I shoot with it will not know if the bullet was going 2900fps or 2570fps it will be dead.

Thanks ,PJ

As I remember you were trying for accuracy NOT FPS.
Are you still using 4064? I would think you might improve on the velocity if you used another powder. That is why some manuals list not only the FPS but which powder tested was most accurate.
And be AWARE of the Bench racing. Some tails just don't always add up when telling about your favorite round.
I would doubt you are going to get much better velocity without using a LOT more powder. Should we say in a pistol a VERY INEFFICIEANT round for a pistol barrel like a 300 WinMAg?
The 06 is about the MOST usable Amount of powder in a 15" tube
If someone claims a higher velocity than a 06 in a 15" tube with LESS powder you might Smile and say thank you!
The 06 is ON the EDGE for Efficiency.
