454 encore barrel
« on: January 02, 2006, 04:07:28 AM »
I am working on a deal that  may get me a 14 inch T/C custom shop 454 cas. barrel with break. no sights holes so it is a scope mount only barrel

will a normal weaver scope base will hold up to the full power 454 loads.

If this deal works out I am thinking about sendign it out and have the break cut off amd make it a 12 incher and maybe dirll and tap for for a 6 hole base and converting my weaver mount for it would this be a wise thing to do  or would I be better in the long run leaving it alone?

This barrel will mostly be used at the range and If i ever get to use it for hunting I ahve a set of pro ears for hunting/

I too would prefer a 12 inch barrel over a 14 incher and from experience I know that the recoil without a scope is quite managable and with the weight of the scope should be even more so.  You shouldn't need the muzzel brake.

As far as scope mounts are concerned, I would go with T/C's Weaver style mounts that you can get from Fox Ridge Outfitters.  The holes in the barrel already taped for the scope should be sufficient.  I would likely let the T/C Custom Shop do the work since that way, if something goes wrong, you have a lifetime warrenty to back everything up.

If you put the scope on yourself, make sure you Loctite the mounting screws for the base if you don't want it to shoot loose.

My buddy has the weaver mount on his which is unbreaked and it is holding up good.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Why is it TC will make a 14 inch barrel in this caliber but won't make me on at 21 inches? They also won't make a 21 inch .45 Colt barrel.
