how big can a handi go ?
« on: January 02, 2006, 03:12:27 PM »
OK ....I have a question. I have a 25-06 ultra, nice gun pretty accurate, love it and would not want to change a thing about it. I have seen the 45-70 BC and thought that was petty cool. What i want to know is; how big of a cartridge can an ultra of handi handle? what is the biggest that one can be bored and chambered for? 460 weatherby mag? how much preasure can they handle?  who does it? how much do they cost ?any info would be appreciated

Where can I find loading data on the 45-120-3ΒΌ" Sharps and the .445 Supermag? They sound like interesting rounds.

why not magnums ?

why are magnums not good in a handi?  what if handloads are used and the power is kept low? the 45-120 is a pretty potent cartridge.... but how is that compared to a magnum...like a 375h&h, which operates at a fairly low preasure 45,000? How about the 9.3x74r, that cartridge only runs at 41,000 cup? I am only asking because i know that big cartridges have inherently lower preasure than smaller high velocity cartridges. what will happen to the frame if it is used with a HI-Po cartridge? is it the kick or recoil which harms them? why does the softer shotgun frames take teh abuse that 3'' slugs and 3.5'' turkey loads produce?

It is not just the pressure that matters dcnewyork, it is the total thrust that is acting on the breech of the rifle. The bigger the case head, the more stress is placed on the reciever assuming that the pressure does not change. If you go to a larger case head, you have to lower the operating pressure to stay safe in a Handi.
