Sportsman's Warehouse opens in Fairbanks
« on: November 03, 2005, 02:07:38 PM »
Finally a real Sports Store open in Fairbanks.  Everyone was excited as they opened the doors yesterday at noon.  The parking lot was full, most people were parking at Lowes and walking across to the store.

I went looking for 50 cal 348 gr powerbelts.  I was running low and no one in Fairbanks carries them.  Cabela's takes time to ship them here.  I thought maybe I'll try the new Sportsman's Warehouse, and by gosh they had them.  I went there and was it a Mad House.  I got there just as they were opening the doors.  Most people were there to see what they carried, and what kind of a store it was.  Not everyone has been to the one in Anchorage.  I quess Fairbanks is finally beginning to grow up.  As I left I looked across the parking lot and saw Chili's is almost finished.  Maybe they will import some decent waitresses, since there is none of them in Fairbanks either.

I was pretty excited when Sportsman's Warehouse opened in Anchorage, since it was within an hour or so driving distance.  I have bought quite a bit of .22 ammo there and some cleaning supplies, but most of my higher dollar purchases go to the smaller stores.  I've got nothing against SW, just guess my tastes are a little obtuse for what they carry.

It is so infrequent that I get to Anchorage or Fairbanks it really costs me me when I hit these stores.  Glad to hear that I can now fill up the credit card in two different cities. :-)

I sort of had a problem with the stores here in Fairbanks.  They felt that all you needed to have was what they carried.  They did not want to order too many things, or a differant brand than what they already had.  Their attitude was that if they did not have it you did not really need it.  Heavens Forbid ever mentioning Cabela's or Bass Pro.  Sentry Hardware was the only place that would order reloading supplies.  Down Under said "what we carry is what you get".  If it did not come through V.F. Grace it did not come to fairbanks.  Since those stores did not support me well then I don't feel that I owe them anything.  Plus their 100% mark up was a little out of line.  This may be a dreaded box store, but at least they have a wide selection of everything, not just one of each item.  And if they don't have it they will order it.

I can't stand for a store to tell me what it is that I want.  Had one shop to tell me, "oh, you don't want that, what you want is..."  Gave the guy behind the worst verbal beating of his life and will not return there ever again.

Hope SW works for you.  I didn't mean to say anything bad about them, just they didn't handle anything that really tripped my trigger, so to speak.  Then again, there isn't a whole lot made these day that does.  Maybe I'm just getting cantankerous?

Yukon.....you'll get over it as soon as the snow is deep enough to snowmachine on or the ice is thick enough to ice fish.

It is just the..... "falls over and it ain't quite winter syndrome."

I use to enjoy going into the SW in Anchorage I am glad there is one in Fairbanks as work takes me there once or twice a year. I do however hate asking a question or talking with any of the hired help as most of them have very little actual knowledge. I have had guys at the fishing counter snub me because I was looking at spinning gear instead of fly stuff and guys at the gun counter tell me I was wrong about the fact that 22 mags were still in production what a dumb one he was !! And one who told me that spinner baits where only good for bass and all I needed for pike was a red & white daredevil. I hate getting talked to like I am ignorant.  I did issue complaints with the management on every occassion but now I will not strike up a conversation with any of the employees untill they say something that shows they actually have a clue about what they are talking about. That means I mostly tend to wlak around till i find what I want then leave. I have also noticed that there chaep prices in Anchorage have made the MountainView sports prices drop to meet them a much smaller and more knowledgeable placeabout AK in my opinion anyway so they are getting alot more of my hard earned money .

Maybe it will improve Mountain View.  Last time I was there, about 1990 they were snobs.  I was not looking for the most expensive back packing lightest weight tent, so they did not want to do much for me.

Anybody been in any of the gun/sporting shops around Fairbanks since SW opened?  I was in Frontier Outfitters/Sentry last weeekend and the place was all but deserted.  I think there was one other customer in the place besides myself and my son.  I also noticed that they had "adjusted" a lot of their prices to match SW.  On the other hand, I was in Arctic Gunworks and there were so many people in there it was hard to get in the door.  Probably lots of people dropping off their SW gun purchases for a bit of work.  I wonder if Down Under will make any "price adjustments."

Thats what I like about pawn shops, we have a tiny pawn shop in towntown seward, dont carry a whole lot, just a little hole in the wall place.  But it's one of those shops you stop in every time you walk by to shoot the @&$%.  They will order anything you want/need.  And actually, if you need something, a lot of times they will say, "I'm making a run to town (anchorage) next week and I can pick it up at sportsmans..."  You gotta love those little shops, I mean, it costs more than something like the warehouse, but you gotta love your shop.
"At least with a gun that big, if you miss and hit the rocks in front of him it'll stone him to death..."
