I just ordered a 300 RUM and was wondering about recoil. I know it can't be any worse then my favorite 338 RUM. When hunting I have the brake off and this thread protector screwed on. The recoil isn't bad with my 338 Rum and my 300 Win isn't bad either. Has anybody had bad recoil from the 300 RUM?

Felt recoil depends on the gun weight, bullet velocity, stock shape, and a million other factors too. Recoil velocity is another big factor. I don't own a RUM, but assuming the .300 will kick less than the .338 can be a mistake. My 10 lb .375 H&H is much more pleasant to shoot than my 8 lb .300 Win Mag. That darn .300 just plain hurts. Differant gun, differant stock. It's kinda like being pushed by a big fat guy vs. getting jabbed in the shoulder by a middleweight boxer.

I have a Savage 116 300 RUM with a factory muzzle brake. It kicks. When doing load development and shooting at the rifle range I use the muzzle brake and a recoil pad I wear on my shoulder. In the field where I would only shoot a few shots, I would turn off the muzzle brake. This rifle gives me less than .5" three shot groups. I haven't used it in the field yet because I have too many other choices in my arsenal.

Its not that bad. my 700 seems to kick straigt back with no upward kick. You really don't even need to hold the forarm. I would put it at #3 as far as nasty goes for my guns. #1 is my Beneli Nova with 3 1/2" turkey loads (which broke a tooth filling this spring) and #2 is my 870 rifled slug barrel. I used to have a scope on my 870 but got sick of the cresent moons on my forhead.

Well I got my 300 RUM today. I put a 4x12 leupole scope on it and will shoot it tomorrow.

I took my 300 RUM to the range yesterday and fired a box of 180gr bullets going about 3250 fps and the recoil wasn't bad at all on the bench.
I thought I would feel it worst then I did but it is really a nice rifle to shoot and accurate. I sighted it in at 200 yds and the group was 1.5. I'm real satisfied with this rifle.

The make is Remington Model 700 and its an Ultra Mag 300. The barrel is 26" long. It is the BDL so that means it is Custom Deluxe. Trigger pull feels like about 3.5 to 4 lbs very smooth. The weight is 7 5/8 lb but my leupole scope weights about a pound so add another lb = about 8.5.
Shoots very tight group at 200 yds I shot a 1.5" group.

Just got the same rifle. Wheeled and dealed at Dick's Sporting goods and left with it for 409.99. This was a brand NIB rifle. Took it home and sanded the high gloss off and refinished it. I'm shooting the 180gr scirocco. Great Bullet. What 180 are you shooting.

I put a Leo scope on my vx-III 4.5-14x50. Love it. I also shoot the 180 sciroccos. Very nice shooting bullet. And does mean and nasty things to game.

I'm using Remington's 180. I haven't shot those yet. What I shot was the Scirocco rounds that came loaded in those that I bought. I have some noslers in 180gr and 150gr I'll use for hunting. I also loaded some noslers in 200gr to 3000 Fps. Witch I think is fast enought. I know that any of these rounds will brake bones in game and kill them dead with the right shot.

Yes any will do, this round is a vicious killer that does mean and nasty things to game. So don't hit'em in the rear quarter or you'll be bringing out burger.

Well I put my 200gr bullets and my 220gr bullets thru my chrony with my 300 RUM The 200's were loaded for 3000fps but did 2975 fps. and the 220's were loaded for 2900 fps but did 2865fps. Both shot to 100yds with out raising the scope. So I'm happy with these fps.

Hi i have a Rem 700 BDL SS DM in a 300 wby . I have been looking a 300 U Mag over hard thinking of saling my 300 wby because it has a 24 inch barrel But it has a De. Magzine . I wish they made a 300 U mag in this rifle. VM

When I bought my 300 rum it was on the Rem website in XCR but not being manufactured yet. My dealer offered me a CDL for $569 . I bought it and never looked back. I grew up on detachable mags but now that I've tried the floorplate I like it better. One less thing to pack or forget. That XCR is available now and I bet it would be a fine rifle. By the way, for me personally, the recoil on my CDL isn't enough to be concerned with. My girlfriend has fired it several times and all she says is "it's too loud "! Killed a couple whitetails with it, way more gun than necessary and with the velocity you need a premium bullet. Swift Scirocco 180 struck a rib just behind the shoulder and came to rest just in the offside flank. Even though it never exited it still left a huge hole in the offside. Perfect mushroom and appears to have retained nearly all of it's weight. Second deer I shot with a 200 Nosler partition just behind the shoulder again quartering towards. Unlike the previous deer that was a bang flop this deers only reaction was to run off down the creek about 80yds cross over to my side then contiued on down the edge of the woods where I lost sight of her. I crossed the creek and looked for any sign of a hit but could find nothing. I went back to where I was sitting and thought about awhile checking my gun and scope , looking for a twig I might of hit but found no reason to miss. Convinced I hit the deer I started tracking her and found her about 180 yds away with no blood trail until the last 10 ft. or so. I indeed had struck her just behind the shoulder and caught a lung. Granted 2 deer with 2 different bullets isn't alot of testing but I think for now I will use the sciroccos on thin skinned whitetails. :shock:

I am going to talk to my wife and see if i can trade and the money i have to pay extra will be for Chrismax. And i will be picking me some 130gr Barnes Triple Shock to load for it. For both deer and coyotes VM

Those Scirocco bullets are good high velocity bullets and accurate too. I did alot of research on them for my 300 RUM.

I just got my 300 RUM about 6 or 7 weeks ago, its a very nice rifle. I only own a 30-06 and 300RUM. When you shoot the 30-06 for 3 years and then you hold on to a 300 RUM and blast a shot, for me I noticed a difference in recoil. It nots that bad, but its defenetly not a 30-06.

My 300 RUM is in remington 700 Police edition (comes with heavy barrel, the guns itself without the scope weights about 9 lbs, which help it soak up the recoil bigtime) and I also shoot nothing but 180 gr remington sciroccos. I am not much of a hunter, all my shooting is done in rifle ranges wich 100, 200, and 300 yards. I don't see much difference between my 30-06 and my 300RUM anywhere between 100 and 200 yards, however When I go for the 300, I notice the difference there

My only complain is the cost of ammo, I buy a box for about 33$ (and I think thats a little expensive)

nasem, With my 300 RUM I reload. It is alot cheaper. I also have the 300 Win and a 30/06. I reload for them too. With my RUM I was very
happy with the performance at 200 yds.

I found that the recoil isn't bad at all. I plan on taking this rifle and my 300 Win bear hunting in Aug. up in Canada. Good shooting to ya!!

I heard some people don't like going bear hunting with fast velocity 30 caliber bullets, they prefer the larger calibers with less velocity.

I suppose if you used a 220 grain 300RUM bullets u'd be OK, but I dunno, Im no bear hunter

nasem, I plan on using the nosler 200gr bullets for bear. They go 3008 fps. The reason for the 3008fps is because it has a bone to brake [ shoulder ] to take the bear down. I have a 338 RUM also. Thats what I used last time. Shooting RN 250gr bullets at 2730 FPS. Witch is not RUM fps. It was down loaded. Good shooting to ya!!

Haven't been on this thread in a while, but the recoil of my 300 RUM is nothing like the recoil of my new 375 h&h (winchester 70 classic stainless).... Man my 375 just plain bothers me after 20 shoots, I dunno why... I am however getting used to it. The first day I shoot it, I only shoot like 6 shoots (zeroed it at 25 yards) then stopped... I didn't want to develope a flinch.
2nd day, I shoot about 15 (zeroed it at 50 and then 100 yards)
and just couple days ago, I shoot a box and 5 bullets (they were remingtons 270 gr SP), THOSE BOTHERED ME :cry:
