444 Ballistics, Reloading Costs, Recoil Questions....
« on: January 10, 2006, 10:08:16 AM »
The ballistics for the new LEVEREvolution ammo from Hornady for the 444 are from a 24" barrel. What would be the difference for velocity and energy from a 22" barrel for 100 yds, 200 yds. and 300 yds.?

What differences are there in buying 444 factory ammo or reloading myself as far as cost is concerned?

I just bought a 444 Marlin the other day. I shot the 444 and then my 30-30 Marlin and noticed that the 444 really doesn't kick much more than the 30-30. I used Remington ammo in both guns... the 444 with the 240 grain bullet and the 30-30 with a 150 grain bullet. The 444 seemed more like a "push" and the 30-30 seemed more like a "hit". I also noticed that the sound of the 444 was more like a "boom" and the 30-30 sound was more of a sharp "crack/bang". I am also wondering if any studies have been done in regards to the relationship between barrel length and recoil (the 444 has a 2" longer barrel). Also wondering if a straight wall cartridge would produce recoil differently than a necked down cartridge? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Also go to www.beartoothbullets.com.  They have a tremendous amount of information and literature on the 444, as well as the 30-30, and the use of cast bullets.  HTH.  Mikey.
