375 Winchester

Well, folk, I made an impulse purchase of a Win. 94 in .375 Win. today.
Has an awfull side mounted junk scope on it with the attendent screw holes in the side of the action.  Other than that, it is in excellant condition, with about 99 percent blue and stock finish.  I paid $249.00, did I get took?

Impossible to know if you got taken until you shoot it. If it shoots and functions well, you got a good deal.

How did your .375 Winchester shoot?  For $249 it seems like you did okay for a price.  I've seen the same rifle (only in beat up condition) with that same ridiculous side scope mount priced $279 at a gun shop in my area (mid-Michigan).

If your .375 is one of the early versions with the top eject than the side mount is necessary for using a scope.  I've seen more than one angle eject Winchester with a side mount installed over the years.  Seems like some guys never got the idea or were just plain cheap and had the mount installed off their old .30-30.   If the rifle is one of the angle eject models then you can throw away that side mount and mount the scope over the bore;  or better yet, install a Williams or Lyman peep sight and restore that Levergun to what it was meant to be, easy to handle and carry.

Please share your opinions of this rifle/caliber once you've had a chance to shoot it.

Finally got the .375 Win out to the range today.
Have not reloaded for it yet, as I have not found any brass.
Shot up three (expensive) boxes of factory loads at the range
(makin' empties for reloading) and was very pleased to find an average
of inch and a half groups at one hundred yards.
I plan to take off the side mount and mount a Lyman peep soon as I am able to pick one up (probably at the upcoming gunshow at which I took a table) I'm gonna be looking at some ugly extra holes in the side of the reciever , but I guess I can live with them given the price of the rifle.
Been looking for one of these for awhile, perhaps I'll find a better one sometime and (providing it shoots well) trade or sell this one.  For now I'm very happy with this purchase.

For some low pressure cast bullet loads, 30-30 brass works fine. It can be opened up on the first pass into the sizing die, then fire formed to open up the entire cartridge. I cast my own bullets for my Contender Carbine barrel and use RP 30-30 cases routinely. They are much thiien at the mouth but do a fine job for cast loads.

Them screw holes in the side of the receiver is why they make blind screws and locktite.  I put a Williams firesight on the front of my old .35 rem Marlin and an AO rear.  Absolutely love this set up!  Also put an AO scout scope mt on the gun but after using the firesight/AO combination, I have no intention of installing a scope.  Good shooting!   44 Man
