How about an H&R Handi-Rifle in .445 Su

Here is the page showing the Ultra in 450M.  These are their HEAVY barrels and not sure if one would be available in 44mag or 444. Not sure if the Ultra's are stronger than standard.

I was just over at yahoo.group NEF Group and after seeing a post by John looking for a survival rifle in .444 Marlin, I got to wondering about the .445 myself...

Then I came across this thread over here!

Consider we like the .44, but want a little more out of it.  The .445 is just that, without going all the way up to a .444Marlin.

Consider too, the HandiRifle's twist is 1 in 38" which is rather slow for the heavy bullets we would consider using out of the .444Marlin.  SO a .445 makes more sense and using 300 gr bullets and less would be idea.  

The main reasons I want a .444 is so that I can use bullets HEAVIER than 300 grain and even the 405's now out!

So I think you are onto something with a .445 rechamber.  Now how hard is the brass to find???

Your right the .445 will work.  You can rent reamers on-line to do the conversion yourself.  You should be able to tread on the heals of the .444 with handloads.

Brass is available for Starline or can be made from 30/40 Krag.  

I am just waiting for the money to do this myself.

Considering you're in Alaska and looking at a .445, what uses do you plan on put it to?

Maybe I could get by with the .445 and forego the .444 altogether!

Sounds like a great round for close-up blackies.  A little light for grizz.  Since I already have a Contender barrel they should be a good pair together. :grin:

Glad to see that I'm not the only one interested in a .445 SM single shot rifle!  This project is still on my "to do" list for the future.  No real desperate need for one; just would love to see what the .445 SM does out of a 22 inch barrel.  According to the reloading manuals the .445 SM treads on the heels of the .444 Marlin out of a 14 inch contender barrel; so maybe just a bit more can be had out of a 22 inch tube.  What do ya think?

The problem is the twist in the nef. A 1/38 might get a 270 gr stable,but it woun,t go heaver. You will need  a faster twist. Marlin was asked why it ,s 444 marlin was rifled 1/38 and not 1/20 like 45/70. They did not know must be an old standerd for the bp rounds. The new marlins have a faster twist.Hand loader big boar rifles has a art on the 444marlin on a roling block. I have a danWesson in445 supermag.. The 240 gr. is to light for hunting deer or large game at the 445 vol. Reloading manuals keep the presures at the same as 44 mag.  Maybe that marlin ownes nef they will change the twist and chamber it in 444m.If it,s  the new browning (jap) it will handel the 444m or 445s It was chambered in 454 casul and 243 on a low wall. So that would not be a problem. But what is the twist on the browning? Most of the time you set the barrel back then rechamber to clean out the old chamber. Make sure that whoever rechamber know,s what he is doing or you might  have a junk nef barrel. It cant be set back like a screwed on barrel.

A .44 mag handi-rifle could be rechambered to the .44 Van Hooten Super,It uses a case 2.00 long and is made from the .303 Br. or the 30-40 Krag. .44 mags.and .445Super Mags may both be fired in the .44 Van Hooten Super.
    The Van Hooten inspired the .444 Marlin.
