The more and more time I spend in this forum, the more and more I like it. Thanks for all of the info. and all of the great pictures.
I have decided to build my own golf ball mortar out of a heavy steel shaft (about 2 1/2" in diameter) that I have lying around. I have no idea what kind of steel it is made out of (it comes from an a manure spreader), but what I do know is that it is plenty thick for a golf ball mortar, and it should definitely be safe. I have a friend who owns a machine shop and am going to have him put the bore and flash hole in the shaft for me. I have several questions pertaining to the mortar:
1) What would the optimal bore size for a golf ball mortar be?
2) What length should I make the mortar?
3) What is a good starting load to try when the mortar is completed?
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
