Author Topic: Removing Rust from the bore (Read 657 times)

Getting a slight amount of light brown discoloration on the patch. The gun was cleaned and put away with a patch and wipe down with Rem Oil. Had always used 3 in 1 prior to this. Hunted in the rain and found light spots on the barrel. Shooting APP with Sabertooth belted bullets. The fouling cleaned with several alcohol patches. Have tried Rem Oil and Outers Foaming Bore Cleaner, for any copper or plastic fouling. No pitting or fouling, bore is spotless to the naked eye. A few questions:

1) Am I correct to assume it is rust
2) Is there a solvent or method for removing it
3) Is Rem Oil an adequate rust preventative

It is surface rust, but if you don't have pitting you are fine. What I do is clean my barrel with Windex with vinegar. I use dry patches to dry bore. I then put breakfree on a patch and swab the bore, followed by a parch with bore butter. I never get any rust in my barrel.

JB bore paste will clean out any surface rusting that you have. Follow the instructions on the jar or card and you'll be fine.

I use naval jelly available at many auto parts stores. Course you gotta be careful with it. It WILL remove bluing and discolor stainless steel.

I could not find JB at the shop, but bought ISSO, and it easily removed the rust. I am somewhat embaressed by the other stuff that kept coming out of what I thought was a clean bore. I thought I was a meticulous cleaner, but maybe I do not know as much as I thought I did. I am wondering if those shockwaves I gave up on will load easier? Something to try at the range. As always, thanks for the responses.

I have had good results with a high quality chrome polish on abused bores. Also found it also helps on new equipment. By polishing the rough surface they seem to load and clean better over the life of the gun.
