Hog and deer
« on: January 09, 2006, 10:15:11 AM »
I have been reading the forum for a few months now and have decided to pick up a Handi for a deer/ wild pig gun.  What caliber would anyone suggest ? Would the bull barrels be any advantage for this application? FYI, I am talking about N. Fla. whitetails not the monsters you get up North or West.

How long would the shots be? Are you a handloader?

BigBend,
I've got a Handi in .243 with the sport barrel. Shot a Saskatchewan Whitetail with it two falls ago...probably about a 230 lb buck...316 yards one shot kill in the neck.
I think the 243 would be a great fit for what you're looking for. They're flat shooting, fairly speedy and just a nice, fun calibre to shoot! Would also fit for some varmint hunting.
Let us know what you go with.

At those ranges, and considering the size of the FL deer, a 30-30 would get the job done. Later, if you handloaded or used the new factory pointy bullets, it's range is extended. Or just get a 30-06, have plendy of power for your neck of the woods AND you would have enough rifle when you get a chance to visit Mulie/Elk Country.

if BM called the 30-06 a squirrel gun this a deer gun would be at least a 416 remmy.

if your putting hogs in the mix why not the 35 whelen?

Mitchell: Read the whole post. No squirrels mentioned. Just deer and hogs.

..decided to pick up a Handi for a deer/ wild pig gun.

Problem is that the Whelen is not currently availble in the Handi.  Besides, the man obviously does not have a 30-06, and we all know that every shooter needs at least one of this classic.

30-06-Good for everything from muse to squirrel.  :-D  :)  :-D  :)  :D Seriously, everybody needs a 30-06. Ammo can be found about anywhere and if you handload a tremendous bullet selection. 2nd choice would be 308. :D

I currently use a Survivor 308 w/bullbarrel for deer and hogs and this rifle works fine.  I mounted a Nikon fixed powered 4x32 scope on it and it has brought home the bacon so to speak.  I hunt in middle Georgia with moderate size deer and big hogs and the 308 is more than enough.  You do your part and the critters just drop.
