I have been fighting with the Handi rifle since I bought it. I, love the idea of a cheap gun that allows barrel switches at a reasonable price, but I have not been able to get the thing to shoot accurately. I may be finally onto a solution to the accuracy problem. The .243 I have has a very deep freebore. If you use the data from the reloading manuals, you may be limiting the possible accuracy of the gun. By seating the bullets out further I was able to cut my groups. It is still not as accurate as my Contender pistol, but it is better.

MnMike, I noticed the same problem with both my hornet and the 22-250. I could make them group better by seating the bullet out farther and I actually seated the 50 gr VMAX in the 22-250 about .050 out farther than the Hornady data specifies. I did reduce my powder charges the closer to the lands the bullet got, didn't want to spike pressure. The hornet will shoot under 1 inch groups with the Sierra 40 gr. hollow point set at normal COL. Go figure!

Mr Blast, I 'm in the same boat as you getting my 22-250 to shoot respectfully. I use a steel rod with 2 collars to measure the OAL of a specific bullet, it sounds a little rustic, but it works. My current loads are seated .010 off of the lands. My current loading is 32.0 gr. of Varget pushing a 55gr. Nosler solid base. What's your favorite load ?

MB and CF,

My 55 gr Vmax's are seated barely .224 for a COAL of 2.48 in 22-250. 0.13 over the published "norm". Mainly due to the polymer tip.

I couldn't get close to the lands. I usually seat one caliber deep, minimum, for consistent grip on the bullet. That was something I heard or read, not sure if it really matters or not.

Mr. Casefiller, my favorite load for the 250 so far is 50 gr. Hornady VMAX over 32.9 grains of IMR 4064 and CCI large rifle primers. The COL on this is the recommended 2.350" I am using winchester cases that have been full length resized and cut to proper length. I have it grouping a little over an inch at 100 yds with some delivering one hole groups, should weigh the cases, I guess. I bought some of the Winchester 45 gr. hollow point ammo from Walmart but found that to be very hot in my rifle and I have to wait about a minute before I can get the barrel to open. Thank goodness that mine has the extractor and not the ejector. My barrel to receiver seems tight to start with, I have to use a little force to get the rifle to close on my neck-sized only cases that were fired in the rifle.

Thanks MB , Sounds like another vote for the IMR 4064. I shot a few samples of this that didn't group bad. As soon as I can get a pound , I'll give it a go

CF, I also found a load that worked in an ADL that I have using the 50 Hornady SP and H-335 but it was within a half grain of maximum and is probably too hot for the handi. Another benefit of the IMR 4064 is the barrel doesn't heat up too quickly.
