Plans for airgun pellet trap
« on: March 12, 2003, 02:50:18 AM »
Do you use your airgun in a basement shooting gallery?  I want to build a pellet trap and was hoping someone would have simple plans to build one from plywood......Let's hear what you made/or purchased.  Thanks!

I used a cardboard box stuffed with old clothes. I taped the front of the box with duct tape to reduce chaff falling on the floor.  This worked fine for pellets up to about 500fps.  It doesn't take much maintenance.

But I have my box filled with heavy duty burlap coffee bags. It depends some on the power of your gun.  My R7  (480-650 fps .177) is pretty mild and won't shoot through a couple layers of the bags.  A hot rock precharged or spring gun might need a tougher back stop, maybe some plywood at the rear for insurance.

The nice thing about the above system is its quiet compared to a metal trap, and cheap and easier compared to a duct seal trap.

Thanks for all the tips.  My Crossman .17 cal. 2100 seems to work pretty well w/ two pumps for BB's and three for Benjamin HC pellets.  Biggest issue I'm having is getting the pellets into the chamber.  I could use a pair of tweezers to set them in.  I tried letting one go through that was loaded in backwards and it was a flyer, tumbling as it hit.

I'm using a 12"X12" cardboard book filled with old sheets and packing mtl., set up in the basement at 25-30 ft.  I taped over the front of the box with duct tape and it's very quiet.  Good point on the steel trap...........  Just too noisey.  I'm finally getting some off-hand practice in for the Spring tree-rats.
