Barrel questions
« on: January 14, 2006, 12:00:55 PM »
Ok guys, I'm going to show my hand here. Are all barrels threaded the same?If I'm looking at barrels in the midway catalog, does a shilen barrel fit all guns or is it brand specific? Does anybody know what the contour would be on my sako model 75 ss/syn 7 rem mag? I love this gun, just wondering if I put a different barrel on could I cut some weight. Thanks for your input.

All brands of receivers will use a different thread pitch, that keeps them different so you don't just get the wrong barrel and put on your rfile.  Some will have a slightly larger diameter as well.

I don't think you can order one for the Sako from Midway, but I may be worng on that.  I would suggest that you contact someone like Douglass Barrels or Pac Nor and send it to them and let them fit it for you.  MOst barrel makers offer the service and should have the info you will need to get the right barrel ordered for you.

I am not sure about the contour of your barrel, how big is it at the muzzle and at the receiver?  I would see if you can get a fluted barrel for it, that can save you around 6-8 oz's.  Cutting off the barrel would normally be what I would do on the barrel, but you have the 7mm Mag and need all that you have on it unless you reload and use a faster powder.

Fluting saves a lot of weight but only one bull or varmit weight tubes.. Sporter weight barrels are usually to thin already to remove much metal. There are carbon fiber wrapped barrels that save some weight and while many barrels are available from suppliers threaded for a particular action you skao is not usually included. It can be rebarreled though and the conture can be replicated..of course that won't save any weight! To save weight either loose some diameter or length or both.. or perhaps go to a lighter conture.. that means the barrel channel in the stock won't fit some good though??  Life is just full of trade offs...
