CZ 550 Safari Magnum Sites
« on: January 12, 2006, 12:21:53 PM »
I have a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in .458 Lott that I wasn't intending to put a scope on.  It seems to me that a dangerous game rifle is better unscopped.  My 500 grain handloads print a little high at 100 yards but not unacceptably so.  Some 300 grain bullets I recently tried print VERY high.  I guess my choices are to only shoot 500 grain bullets, put a lower front site on or put a scope on the gun.  If I put a scope on it, I'd want one that was easily detached and reattached.  Any suggestions on the best way to proceed would be appreciated.  Five hundred grain bullets seem a bit much for deer and the odd groundhog.

I have a scope on my CZ 550 Safari Magnum in 416 Rigby. To take the scope off, all I have to do is loosen 2 screws. Put it back on and tighten 2 screws. Then do a quick check for zero.  :D

Thanks for the reply.  I have a few questions about your scope mount.

1.  Can the screws holding the scope on be hand loosened or does it require an Allen wrench?

2.  Where did you get the mounts?

3.  Does the scope stay firmly in place until you wish to remove it?

I just need a screw driver to take the screws loose. I ordered the mounts when I ordered the gun from CZ. http://www.cz-usa.com/01.07.php
Yes, the scope stays in place. It is a good set up.  :D

The only way i would go would be to use Talley quick release rings nothing needed but your fingers they have levers on the rings and this in my opinion is the only way to go if you if you think you may  have any need to go to iron sights in an emergency. Go to www.talleyrings.com

I looked at the Talley site and those quick release rings look good.  Thanks for the info.

It turns out that B-Square and Warne make quick release rings for the CZ 550 but in looking at the photos on the Talley web site, I think their rings look a bit better with longer levers.  I'm going to call them this coming week.

I also found that CZ USA sells different height front sites for the CZ 550.  It's easy to pop one out and put in a different height so I ordered some to work with different loads.

Now I need a rifle scope with good eye relief that will stand up to 458 Lott recoil.  If I'm not careful, I get dinged in the forhead and bleed when shooting my Encore in 375 H&H Mag. topped with a Leupold scope; I'm not anxious to have this happen with a 458 Lott.

I plan on purchasing a cc550 american safari in 458 Lott this winter or spring, and have decided to go with Leupolds  1.75X6.  Thats if i dont go with a fixed 2 or 2.5  also plan to use those Tally quick release rings. Later Tanoose
