Author Topic: Nikon Buckmaster or Leupold VX-1. Which is better. (Read 1615 times)

I need a scope for a new CZ 550 American in 308 I just bought. I want to get a 3x9x40 scope for it and I am on a budget. A place can sell me either a Leupold VX-1 or Old model 6425 Nikon Buckmaster for the same price. So if price is no object, which one is a better scope.

I like the Buckmasters really well, I have the old and new models 3X9's, both great scopes for the money...........

I'm with poncaguy on this one. I like the Nikon Buckmaster over the VX-I.

Buckmaster, hands down. Better glass, one-piece tubes, and 1/4" click adjustments (that are finger adjustable). VX-1 has roughly 88% light transmission, and the Buckmasters are rated at 91%. I have one on a .280, and it is a very good scope.

One question, though. Why go with an older model Buckmaster, when you can get a 2005 model for the same price as the Leupold?

Simple...ask if you can look thru both of them on a try stock outside in natural light..look into shawdows and look into the light..see which scope flares the easiest..and see which scope allows you to define objects in the showdows..if possible.. try them at first or last lite..Try moving your head around on the stock and see which scope affords you the best view..with and without your hunting coat/jacket/shirt on....Try mounting the scope quickly and seeing how easy or difficult it is to get your site picture.. all these things matter more than a computer generated figure of amount of light the scope transmit..because everyones eyes are different..Then go with the one you feel gives you the best view...looking at one under store lights isn't a good indication of how it will do outside in varying light conditions..both are good scopes..but each will give you different results..

The VXI is the most overpriced piece of shooting equipment that has ever been produced! I, for the life of me, can't believe that people still buy those things. Someday maybe people will stop buying the bottom of a coke bottle with the "L" word on it. WDO

I think that advise is good & I don't buy that model.

It seems that with any company that has multiple lines of products to target different price ranges, well it is tough to be the best in each catagory. Doesn't matter if it is scopes, rifles, boats, cars, trucks you name it & some companies will excell in one price range & be less desirable in others. Look at Remington for example. The Sendero is one
of the most accurate factory rifles that you can buy, but when they wanted
to get in the lower rifle price range with the 710, well I would not buy one at any price. It is that way with most industries & this is why I will NOT be
married to any brand scope, car or anything else.

I believe that Leupold makes some of the best high end scopes you can buy. And like Greybeard himself has said, in the mid range or upper mid range if you will , the VXII is one of the best if not the best values in THAT price range. I use Leupolds on some of my guns & allways will, but it's the
models that offer me something & not just because of the L word & the Golden Ring.

But concerning the Subject of this post, the VXI vs the Buckmaster, especially the new Buckmaster, the Buckmaster kicks it's butt in about
every way as Jason280 accurately pointed out. And for sure, I would get the new version. In that price range, I just don't see the why of the Leupold, it's OK, but others are better. And in Varmit Scopes, the New Buckmasters 4X14 Mil Dot is getting rave reviews everywhere. I plan on
ordering 2 soon.

I believe that the Nikon Buckmaster is a much better scope than the VXI. A more appropriate comparison would be Buckmaster vs. the VXII (which is essentially last year's Vari-X III). In this instance, the Buckmaster has better glass, but the leupold has a bit better strength, longer eye relief, and are lighter. It might be worth the extra money to get a VXII over a Buckmaster.
