Adjustable Objective..... pros cons... uses.... practicality
« on: January 12, 2006, 04:05:52 PM »
I'm a Keep it simple kind of guy for the most part. I'm looking at alot of different scopes mainly for whitetail out to 300 yds. I woud like something in a 4-12 or 4-16x range, but I'm not familiar with AOs and just wanted to know afew opinions....

Keep it Simple:  3-9x40

The AO adds weight and length normally.  Just another thing to fiddle with.

If you are going to target shoot with the same rifle and wanted to save money then get it and set the AO to 100-150 yards and leave it at 4x while in the woods.

Otherwise, consider the Nikon, for $290 at Midway you could get the Buckmasters 4-14 or the Monarch 3-9.  In this example you would get a much better set of lenses and guts but with the tradeoff of fewer features (no AO).  IMHO

Do yourself a favor and ignore the comment on buying from Midway and check out the lower prices of GBO Sponsor The Optic Zone.

Also do yourself a favor and forget the high magnification scopes, keep it simple with a 3-9 max. Over 9X I feel some kind of parallax adjustment is necessary, but if you have it you must use it. On a hunting rifle that is a pain in the rear you really don't need. I refuse to go afield for big game with a scope that requires me to adjust parallax.

Well put GB. 3x9 is what I've always used.  The only time I really yearn for more is when I'm spot and stalking in open country and glassing deer.  :-)   spotting scopes just seem awkward to carry when walkin a pasture....

I intend to get a Leupold vx-ii 3-9x40. Whether I get it from John will depend on if his lower price will make up for the cost of rings, mounting, boresighting and shipping. The local Gander Mtn said if I bought the rifle and scope they'd throw in leupold rings and mounts and install/boresight for free. Also said they'd do the install on a SVL recoil pad for free.

I was just curious about the AO though.

Ouch, Graybeard is right about the price differences.  $40-50 is a big difference.  Freight is what is killing me at Midway, will shop around better.

I think that my arguement for a dual use scope is valid...I just wouldn't do it personally.
