Ruger GP100 and others
« on: October 26, 2005, 07:35:07 PM »
I went to my local shooting range last week with my cousin since he was thinking about buying a pistol and wanted to shoot some.  I have been to this range several times to shoot my sigpro 9mm which I got alittle over a year ago and is the only pistol I own.  We each rented different guns to try out and one of them was the ruger gp100.  I thought that this gun was really fun and pleasent to shoot and I really liked it.  I know there are other manufacturers who make guns similar to this and was wondering if you could list some for me.  I am looking for a .357 but will mainly shoot .38 special with it.  I would also mainly use it just for target shooting and fun, so compact size for carrying really isn't an issue.  I would not like to spend too much so I am looking for a good value where I can get the most bang for my buck.  Out of the different models and manufacturers I would appreciate it if you could give your opinion on the pros and cons of them also.  Thanks alot.

I have a GP100 with a 4" barrel and its fun to shoot. As far as a cheaper handgun I thought Ruger was pretty cheap with very well made guns. :D

I traded an XD40 for a 6" SS GP100 357.............I feel like a thief! What a great revolver this is, super accurate and pleasant to shoot.
My other 357 is a 8" Dan Wesson 357, it has a really great trigger, not as accurate for me as the GP100, but still a great pistol.

I have a Ruger GP 100 w/6 inch barrel, only revolver I have ever owned. Very accurate with 38spl ammo, mainly because of lack of recoil. Love this gun.

EDITED: I now own 2 GP-100's (KGP-161 and KGP-141) and a used S&W 67-1. All are keepers.

:cb2: Most of my DA revolvers are Smiths, but if you are looking for a great fun gun—accurate and built like a tank, then get the GP100. You WILL need a trigger job, and you might want to lightly file some of the roughness off the hammer (it'll wear your thumb out!), but other than that you'll have an excellent handgun that will out survive your great grandchildren. Get the 6"--it's the best looking!

Now let me know when you're ready for serious shooting fun and then we'll talk about Single Action Rugers . . .  :D

My GP-100 is SS and shoots great.  It's a solid, well made handgun.  I added Williams Fire Sights to mine and they really help these tired old eyes.

cknight98, I agree with everything except the sights. Ruger GP-100s with adjustable sights have a plug-in front sight that is a very nice design. You can change it with a host of Ruger or after market sights in a few seconds. The plug-in sights are inexpensive (except night sights). Ruger's rear sight leaf is also easy to change and are available in many different formats. The fixed sight models don't have plug-in front sights and of course you can't do much with the rear sight.

There's also a bunch of different grips available for the Ruger. Because it uses a post instead of a grip frame, you can buy round or square butt designs. Ruger has two styles of grips ... the standard ones that come on an adjustable sight model, and a compact set for the fixed sight model. Additionally, the Ruger Super Redhawk shares the same grip mount so any grip that fits one will fit both.
