Float the barrel ahead of the screw? Good idea?
« on: January 13, 2006, 03:08:34 PM »
Hey gang, i tried the search this time, doesn't seem to be working.

It seems there is tons of contact with the stock even with an o-ring on my new handi. I'm thinkin it would be pretty easy to float it from the screw forward...is this a common and useful mod?

Blake

p.s. thanks for tips on the new 'extractor'

Sand away the hight spots in the forearm groove. You only need few thou, try it with a dollar bill if it clears you got enough. Try it like that.

I bed my forearm. See my web page.

I sure hope it is a useful mod.  When the weather had been bad this winter and I was bored I did it to my 223 Ultra and my 22 mag ultra.  I did it like Fred M said, sanded it until a dollar bill would slide under the forearm.

Yeah, i hope its useful too, thats why i asked......cause i already did it too lol. :) I can fit a tad more than a dollar bill in mine. I can fit a piece of sandpaper in there.

I haven't shot it yet but figured it couldn't hurt to float the front end before i started?

I'll shoot it tomorrow i think and i'll try to group it a bit. Still waiting for my 6-24x42 scope to show up so i through a weaver k2.5 that i had laying around on it just so i could go shoot it at 100 yrds a bit and see if its got potential that way? Will post my findings. I'll be out coyote hunting a bit tomorrow so i'm sure i'll find a place or two to build a quicky range to try this gun out while i'm out there.

I have found thru past experiments if you want to use the Handi with a sling, and utilize the hasty sling method....it is better to have it floated a-little wider than normal. This will keep the barrel off the sides of the forearm. You will have to resite it after doing this, because it can change your original point of impact from a cold barrel on the first shot dramaticly.

Thanks Mac, i've never floated a barrel before but figured this was the right priced rifle to try it out. I bought some 80 grit sand paper from home depot and cut into 2" strips. I loosened the screw in the forearm bigtime to make room to work the sand paper in along the barrel just pulling side to side and kept tightening the screw a little bit at a time until it was as tight as i was gonna leave it, so its well floated.

Not sure how much it helped but i shoot bi-pod lots and off shooting stix lots...rarely freehand...so i figured this would be necessary to float it so i didn't haven any variables from those things to worry about.

I got to shoot it today...i gotta say i'm impressed. I will give a 'range report' in a new post. Thanks for the tips.

Blakeyboy, that's the way i sanded my forearm,too.......it made my blueing very light in some places, like it tried to take it off,and I was just rubbing the back of the sandpaper on it.....did yours do this, too?
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

That is certainly a different way of doing that....I never thought about sanding it that way :) I might have to try your way on another one..Thanks

I usually use various size wood dowel rods to wrap the sand paper around. This way I can vary the amount of wood I remove and keep the barrel channel even.A inexpensive way of bedding it afterward is to use RTV automotive silicon. Here's my 270 Ultracomp using the RTV...The RTV is real easy to work with and easily removed if you make a mistake..you can see a bit of the run over I scaped off with my fingernails at the bottom...It stablelized it pretty good..

Thanks again, i don't know anything about bedding, that would scare me. And yes on the blueing wearing off a little...which i wasn't too worried about because i figured this gun would be the perfect price for a camo paint job.

I've been trying to start another post about my first day shooting it but i can't seem to stay connected here for long and major delays trying to respond etc.
