chronographed loads
« on: February 05, 2006, 01:53:52 PM »
I finally chronographed my load that I have been using.
The components are the Lee 500 3r, 61.3 gr of goes 2f, 1 milk container wad, 3 newspaper wads between bullet base and milk wad, primer pocket drilled to 3/32", and a fed 210mag primer.

2  ten shot groups were fired-
group 1-low was 1090 fps, high was 1124 fps, average= 1109, and stnd dev is 11

group 2-low is 1099, high is 1137, average is 1113, and stnd dev is 13.

Using a rem RB with a 28" barrel.
I seem to remember reading most velocities guys are getting are closer to 1200-1300 fps range.  Are my loadings off?  Should I be getting more speed?  Thanks.

your 28 in barrel is a little of the difference and your chamber cut ,throat and a whole lot more variables need to be taken into account . if you think your loads are too slow then add powder . My 30 inch barrel with 68-70 gns and a 550 gn bullet runs a tad over 1200 .they are all different....Dean

hiram: Your crono data looks about right given Goex powder and a rather light amount.  I'd jump up to at least 68 to 70 grains.   Regardless of your components and powder amount, I'd be trying different load combinations, to lower your velocity average and SD numbers into single digits.  The load performance and accurcy will improve.   If you simply want more velocity switch to Swiss powder.     Best regards steve witt

Thanks for the info.  I'll try upping the loads a bit to lower the SD, but that may not yield better accuracy.  I'll give it a shot (pun)

hiram i to use the lee 500r bullet .030 card  and 70 grn of wano fff premium thats all i can get at the moment here in west australia. the fff premium wano is very good i was quite suprised with the stuff it likes a lot of compresion and burns
very kleen and leaves soft foweling, my loads do 1295 to 1301 fps over 10 shots for an average of 1298 fps, using a blow tube 3 blows between shots.at 200 meters of crosed sticks 24 soft drink cans end on 20 hits cant complain about that.i also size the 500r to .457 my buffalo classic shoots that size beter and i also use rooster red bp7 lube no leading with the 20 to 1 lead tin mix.

When the weather gets warmer, I'll get out to my friend's club in New Jersey and try 200 and 300 yds.  My club is 100 yds.  I got very, very good results on paper with pyrodex select.  I did not chrono that.  I just got 2# of APP 3f.  I think I'll have execellent results with that.  I size the Lee to .458, 20:1.  I made a batch of bullets 30:1 but haven't tried them yet.  I also made the Lee 405 hollow base in 20:1.  First results weren't great, but I'll reshoot, with and without a wad.
