740 rem in 30-06/good reloads?
« on: June 07, 2004, 01:21:11 PM »
Am just starting to reload for a 740 Rem in 30-06. What powder and bullet weight should I start with? I am interested in accuracy not necessarily velocity. This rifle will be used for deer and black bear in Wisconsin.

220 grain Hornady load

I've gotten very good accuracy from 51 grains of DuPont IMR 4350 under a 220 grain Hornady round nose. It has good sectional density for penetrating the brush and the velocity is about 2400 fps out of the 18 1/2 inch barrel 7400 Carbine I shoot. It is sighted for 200 yards and gives hits just about 3 inches high at 100 yards.

Thanks for the advice. I will try this load after working up from a few grains lower in my rifle.

Hey guys,
I'm about ready to order a BAR short trac in .308. I was wondering if you use small based dies for your Rems.     Thanks--Pat

The small base dies are a good idea for both the remington pumps or the auto loaders.  Make sure the cases a full length resized or there might be trouble trying to camber the round.
