Custom Swede came with me today
« on: December 13, 2005, 10:29:24 AM »
As part of a trade, I just got a Carl Gustav 1901 6.5 Swedish Mauser that had been professionally re-done into a very small, light sporter. I wouldn't call is a Bubba..the work looks like it has been done by someone skilled and able. Looks like 1960's - 1970's style stock, medium Monte Carlo, cheek piece, squared off front to the stock, jeweled bolt, 2 position safety, very light trigger, still 2 stage, barrel shortened to 18 1/2", and with a deep, target type crown. Stock is nice walnut, with a recoil pad, sling swivels, Weaver mounts.

Also, got a box of S&B ammo, 131gr SP's.

I really like the look and feel of this rifle, and will shoot it when the weather warms up a little.

Hi dogngun:

Sounds like you picked up a real cherry.  And of course the 6.5x55 is still one of the very best rounds ever designed.  You are a very lucky man to have picked up something that sweet.  Hope you didn't have to trade everything to get that!!!

The trade was 2 handguns that were in my drawer unused for the Mauser and a pretty interesting SMLE No 4 Mk 1/2, a WWII era Mark 1 rifle that was converted to a Mark 2 ( changing the trigger assembly ) in a 1956 rebuild. The Mauser was only in the shop less than a month - I didn't notice it last time I was there, just looked through the sporting rifles and was very impressed with it.

I feel good about the trade, and will be doing a little work on both rifles over the winter to keep out of trouble.

I just love old rifles.

dogngun - good trade on both counts!  That Swede sounds real sweet.  I have owned a few rifles of, shall we say in deference, 'early custom work' and wouldn't consider any of them 'bubba-ed'.  That is good custom work from an earlier time.  I would grab that Swede in a minute just to have it and shoot it.  That is easily one of the best woods/field combinations I could imagine.  The 6.5 Swede is a great caliber, you won't be disappointed.  The S&B 131 grainers are very accurate in my 6.5s.  Have fun.  Mikey.

Congrats on getting what sure sounds like a fine rifle. I love both the Swedish Mausers and the 6.5x55 cartridge. They make a wonderful combination for the knowledgeable hunter.

About 17 years ago I bought my Wife a Model 95 Carl Gustav 6.5 Swede.
I had a gunsmith sporterize it & shorten the butt a little & install a Pac. Dec. Pad & no it did not need it, but now it is super mild. This is the only
Deer Rifle that she wants to shoot. She shot a six point Sunday before last
with the 129 Hor. Lt. Mag & it was a bang flop. These are great rifles.

I love the 6.5's. Have three of them now, all varying degrees of customization. Funny thing is the nicest one is probably the worse shooter. The two others are very accurate and very mild shooting. My wife can shoot hers all day. A co-worker borrowed one on a hunting trip and liked it so much had me track down another for him to use as his primary hunting rifle, and this is a guy that can shoot .338 lapua mags no problem.

My first winter is Canada was a shock.  I didn't think winter would ever end.  I went out and got an old Swedish M96 and restored it to pass the time.  It came out so nice I've since refinished 2 more of them.  I didn't want to sporterize them so I bought a commercal 6.5x55, a Remingtoin Classic.  Now I have the best of both worlds and in my favorite caliber.  Best wishes

Sounds like a handsome rifle, but will it shoot? I know most folks think they all do, but the only rifle that I couldn't improve was a Model 96 made in the WWI era.

Congrats on a great trade.  I only have one 96 Swede and it has been customized.  Its the best shooter I have in the cabinet.  Hope to take my Grandaugter hog hunting this spring and I plan on her using this rifle.  Mine loves the Hornady 129 so much that clover leafs at 100 are possible if I do my part.  You are going to love yours.  Enjoy.

Have put some money down on a really neat little 94 Swede.  Just browsing through a store, and there it was - sporterized with a nice, solid mannlicher stock.  Barrel cut down to 18.5", crowned muzzle, in 6.5x55, and the shop owner knows the guy selling it, who says it's a very accurate shooter.  Bore is clean, drilled and tapped for Leupold one-piece mount, which it has - I've got an old Realist 2 3/4 fixed power scope I'll mount on it.

Can't frickin' wait to get started using this one.  Whooppee!!
