Dive Weights...suitable for casting?

Recently received a substantial quantity of lead dive weights (the slotted ones that fit on a dive belt) from a friend that used to SCUBA.  He claims they're pure lead.

Question:  What are dive weights usually made of?  I'm sure they're lead, but are they alloyed with anything nasty?

Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom, guys.  If these things are good to go, I'll be set for lead for a loooong time.  My buddy must have been rather buoyant!   :shock:

In general you can't find these weights much anymore.  They went to belts that hold lead shot instead.

I spent 3 years as an assistant instructor of SCUBA a lot of years back and in those days they were generally made from........wheelweights.

Great, I was hoping it was something like that.  Now to go after his old diving buddy's weights...  8)
